The Mechanics of Magic
Magic, as it is understood by man, revolves around the ability to manipulate specific aspects of reality, with more complex spells and effects requiring mastery of two or more of these aspects.
A mage is anyone who is able to freely manipulate at least one aspect of reality. Novice magi will be able to briefly control one, whilst the most powerful mages will have mastery over all of them.
Specific, discrete effects, known to the general populace as "spells", are well-known combinations of elements that produce a consistent effect. A spell can be learned by rote by anyone with a basic education in the arcane and, once known, is much easier to invoke than directly manipulating elements.
A true mage is a force to be reckoned with, as their ability to conjure new effects is limited only by their imagination and talent.
