Prof. Marcella Dunebrook
The daughter of an inventor and a historian, Marcella has merged her parents’ expertise into a stellar career. For decades, she was the frontrunner in the field of Wasteland Research at Lark’Hal’s Institute of Magic and the Arts (LIMA), the inventor of the Miasma-Warding Device (MWD), and the lead archeologist involved in the rediscovery and conservation of the City of Fortune. Comfortably tenured in her position at LIMA and with reporters itching to interview the famous professor… she clearly had everything: success, position, standing, fame. So why in the world then is Marcella Dunebrook in Legacy? Why leave the comforts of her position at LIMA? Why risk the foray into the miasma when there remains plenty to discover in the vast City of Fortune?
For starters, academia was always a means to the end for Dunebrook. A professorship meant that she had resources and funding at her disposal, but it also meant she had to teach. Although professional, incredibly well spoken, and poised, teaching was never her calling. Her passion was always lost on students. And by The One, Dunebrook does not need fame. Outside of her own sphere, she is utterly at a loss of how to act. Further, why should she stop at the City of Fortune? If she was able (with help) to access a city lost for 1,000 years, why shouldn’t she try and do the same for the continent that’s been lost for thousands of years? Dunebrook isn't one to rest on her laurels. While Legacy certainly has it risks, it also means Marcella doesn’t have to teach and she can pursue her work in peace without the press hounding her every move. To the eccentric historian, Legacy is a peaceful haven with unbounded potential.
Dunebrook has always been enamored with lost history and uses technology to aid her in this pursuit. When not in the Academic Center, she can be found at the Temple Ruins in the center of town. Although not the one to make the discovery, she has taken over the “dig” and is attempting to understand its intended purpose and if it contains any clues that might aid in her research pursuits.
Miasma-Warding Devices
Marcella's ground-breaking invention is a hulking monstrosity of metal, crystal, glass, and various moving parts that spew smoke and arcane charge. Portions of the metal have been carved with delicate and intricate arcane runes that correspond to something more complex than a simple spell. Powered by arcane means and the advances made by IronForge Industries – namely the fuel cell – the MWD is capable of creating a small protected "bubble". While within the bubble, the machine has proven capable of keeping the negative impacts of the miasma out... for the most part.
The newly installed MWD hums to life, choking and sputtering for a moment before it releases an ethereal hum that persists as a shimmering light surrounds it before expanding outward. The miasma hisses as the ward makes contact. Although the miasma initially retracts, it begins to push and lap constantly at the shimmering light... waiting for a weakness to emerge.
