Session 9 - When the Evening Talk Happens in the Evening

General Summary

An Afternoon Around Legacy

Teagan joins Jeff in the mines per usual. After a few long minutes of silence, Jeff asks if Teagan got everything he wanted. Teagan responds that he went directly through the "big man" himself to which Jeff responded that he knew all he needed to know about Teagan from that alone. After another few moments of silence, Teagan opens with a banger: "So I killed a god yesterday". And how did that feel? Well, the god was kind of already dead and we didn't actually attack the god, but we brought his body back. And where is that body? Oh, it's in the Academic Center. Why do they need a god's body? Teagan suddenly remembers that he may have signed an NDA. Well, consider that some insider information between buddies!
Do you ever say a word too often it loses its meaning? Teagan nods. Jeff continues: Do you think if you talk enough about an action, it loses its meaning? That is suddenly deserves forgiveness? Teagan responds that it depends on the action. Hey, Jeff, did you ever have someone special? Jeff pauses before he does respond that he was married to a halfling woman. Riots broke out in his town over VIllám and she was hurt in the chaos. As far as Jeff knows, she's still in a coma. When you killed that god, did you look him in the eye? Teagan remembers the creepy smile: unfortunately. Jeff didn't bother. He followed the man who hurt her to the edge of a cliff and shoved. She was what made him better; now Jeff's worse he supposes. Teagan informs Jeff that if he'd probably done the same thing. What about you? Teagan says he's... married, yeah. Jeff squints. What made that sour? Teagan responds: tragedy. Hey, Jeff, want to join us for drinks tonight?
Yenush and Arkyn head over to Ironborn to talk. Yenush inquires about prosthetic upgrades. After eventually settling on getting something that might help him swim and move more efficiently, Ironborn promised to have a designed prepared by tomorrow afternoon. Arkyn then asks how close Ironborn and his great-great-grandfather were. Ironborn responds that they were good friends. Okay, so why did he have a void shard in his axe? Yenush, initially content to hang around, decides to head on out – this does not seem like a conversation for him. Ironborn responds with a question: Would you like to have your reputation of your ancestor sullied or not? After giving half-answers, Arkyn finally decides on having Ivan's reputation sullied. Ironborn responds that Ivan approved an assassination attempt on his land's own High Priest, supplied the Pirate Lord with needed materials for the Siege of Varoona, and served a role in the Order of the Dread King. Oh. Why? Ironborn responds that Ivan (and he) believed the words of a friend; you cannot prepare for a war if there is no visible threat. Ivan was lucky, he never truly had to use the axe, but with it having a Void Shard, Ivan passed it to Ironborn rather than down to one of his children.
Arkyn eventually reasons that if it was for the greater good, it's all good. It's clearly not the cause of his touch-based problem; that's from his father. Ironborn pauses. Have you seen things in the miasma? Yes, lots of things. After a few more questions, Ironborn mentions that Akryn should speak to Khalil. He has a "pet project" investigating some oddities among residents of Legacy.
Arkyn heads upstairs to Khalil who he finds elbow deep poking around in a dead god's body. The moment Arkyn mentions his "affliction', Khalil magically cleans the ooze off his arms and sits at his desk, motioning for Arkyn to do the same. Arkyn explains that he has a touch-based affliction; he's had it since he was young. And he's had "pings" with people. Khalil takes notes as Arkyn spills the beans:
  1. Arkyn – Touched-based affliction, child of Otsana (Khalil recognizes the name as associated with an item delivered to the Temple of Caliban), "Moon Boy", pings with Sayah and Madame Blythe.
  2. Teagan – Prone to hitting his friends.
  3. Aiaoue – Doesn't like the water.
  4. Cadence – She gets angry and is overly fond of darkness.
  5. Yenush – He doesn't like reading (that's not an affliction)
  6. Milo – Is fine.

Khalil mentions that he'd quite like to speak to everyone Arkyn named. In response, Arkyn invites Khalil out for drinks. Meanwhile, Yenush finds Vendetta and plays a round of "don't let Vendetta trip you" with Ozti.
Milo and Cadence visit the Church. Milo, a bit shaken by his dream (don't worry though, he's fine and there's NOTHING wrong with him) makes an offering to Tel'Rhea. Cadence makes her normal round of offerings to Caliban. As they depart, a vulture-like aarakocra stands at the base of the steps leading up to the Church. Using mage hand, the aarakocra delivers Milo two letters before quickly shuffling away.
Aiaoue, after picking up jeweler's tools from Mistress Eight, heads to the tavern for her oven time before realizing she forgot her ingredients. With apples in hand, Briella and Jin (who is awake) help to set up the kitchen. Once the apple slices are in the oven, Aiaoue opens up the tea-spilling session. Since Jin is a bartender, he obviously must know something about Omarosa?? Jin mentions that they don't swing through the Tavern unfortunately, but he does know that she's fiercely protective of her brother, Viren, and that she supposedly has some struggles with the arcane from time to time (despite her ambitions of being a mage). Aiaoue remarks about how Yenush is fixated on laws. Jin comments that laws are breakable where he's from – he adheres to the Rites of Chaos. Jin doesn't notice how Aiaoue sours at that. Shortly after, Jin passes out.
Aiaoue and Briella discuss the menu for the upcoming Gotcha Day. As Aiaoue lists seafood dishes, Briella seems excited. Zix will eat almost anything provided there's a lot of it! But he has a fondness for seafood and he can't have Ah'Shazza (it gives him indigestion). When Aiaoue asks who Briella is fond of, the young gnome responds that she's very fond of Eight! She'd like to be like her one day! Do you know of a Yuan-Ti? Briella mentions that there was a Yuan-Ti who, from time to time, would be at Eight's. He seemed nice enough. Aiaoue mentions that Yenush wants to arrest him to which Briella seemed surprised. Briella also doesn't know much about Omarosa, but she promises to relay anything she finds to Aiaoue.

An Evening Talk... In the EVENING (Kind of)

As the group settles into the tavern for dinner and drinks, Arkyn opens with his persistent 3-corvid problem, Sayah. Yenush thinks that Arkyn needs to have his feelings-based ducks in a row. Cadence supports the apology gift. Aiaoue suggests offering Sayah a pebble; Aiaoue still has the pebble Alcide gave her after all. Teagan is of the mind that Arkyn needs to wait it out. If she comes around, she'll come to you, but just be prepared for a prank. And when she pranks you, just laugh it off. So if she stabs me... Wait, hold on, is a STABBING your idea of a prank? Arkyn, WHAT IS A JOKE TO YOU?
The tavern suddenly quiets as Dr. Khalil strolls in, unperturbed. As Khalil sits down, he begins asking questions one-by-one. Aiaoue is initially reluctant to give out the information on her "ping", but acquieses once Khalil gives her all he knows about Omraosa. She's his assistant (there is definitely nothing more) and she is very hard-working and devoted. She clearly cares deeply for her brother. From what Khalil knows, she has an interest in preventing disease; supposedly her brother was ill when they were younger.
  1. Cadence – Another person speaks to her and she suspects it is Eresh. She has a fondness for darkness. Her pings have been both of anger directed at Quill and Omarosa.
  2. Aiaoue – There's a lady on a pier who sings often about love. Her ping is with Viren, a more protective one.
  3. Teagan – There's some clawing and some anger. Oh, and a darked, armored lady. His pings have been kinship wth Milo and protectiveness over Jin.
  4. Milo – Obviously Milo is fine... but actually he keeps seeing a rider and a horse. His pings have been kinship with Teagan and anxiety with Marcia.
  5. Yenush – He clearly has no affliction, but he had something with Ademar.

With notes taken, Khalil stands to leave. Teagan, suspicious of his intent, notes that Khalil intends to get to the bottom of "what" this is, but whether or not he intends or CAN fix it is unclear.
Shortly after Khalil's departure, Jeff arrives calling for shots all around. Sayah returns as a topic and, in response to hearing about it for the first time, Jeff comments: "Want to have a roll in the nest?". Aiaoue understands that reference, but Arkyn is very confused. A nest? Wouldn't that be very uncomfortable. Oh no! Aiaoue explains that nests can be very comfortable and some build VERY large nests!
Mistress Eight arrives and her entrance is noted with small nods of respect and acknowledgement. After hearing some discussion of their afflictions, Eight mentions that she may be able to bind it away... at least for a time. What would you need to do that? Blood. Eight explains that she does not have a soul and thus draws magic from other means. Arkyn asks if she was like Mama Ten? Yes. Wait, but Mama Ten aged and died? There was a time where the first blood witch, the Being of Blood, was fading... but they have since been retethered. Eight likens herself to an equivalent figure to a god on the Dremoran pantheon... but of a different order.
Teagan, a little bit into his cups, turns to Jeff. Hey man, let's talk about FAMILY. If your brother did something bad, like broke a law or something, what would you do? Jeff - definitely tipsy and leaning into it - remarks that "if you're a real one" you go down with them. Look at his cousins! They're here with him! Teagan enthusiastically responds: THAT'S FAMILY (like Milo's perfect family)... before he slumps onto the table crying a bit. Mistress Eight and Aiaoue both fix Yenush with deadpan stares. Yenush meets their stares and does not cave. Aiaoue thinks family is wonderful! Maybe one day Arkyn and others will have a family! She wasn't able to... Jeff relates to that. Oh, did you have a non-aarakocra partner? Jeff affirms that before he decides now would be a perfect time to go cliff diving. Teagan and Arkyn think that's a GREAT idea. Yenush, Cadence, and Milo DO NOT.
Yenush quickly runs to find Viren just to give him a heads up that his idiot friends might be in need of healing. There's clearly a fight of some sort going on in Sinner's Choice, but Yenush ignores that in favor of going to Viren. The healer goes deep red immediately as Yenush begins talking. Before he can get far, a manicured hand slams on the table. What are you doing? My brother is off, do you can bugger off, thank you. Omarosa is not pleased, but Yenush keeps his cool. All the while, Ademar simply watches, seemingly amused.
Jeff easily glides from the cliffside to the water below, floating lethargically. Aiaoue jumps, ushered forth by wind as she lands near the water's edge cushioned by her Entangle vines. Arkyn looks at Teagan and casually tells him to let the ground swallow him. A moment later, both are launched through the ground into the water below. Cadence and Milo talk as they walk like normal people down to the water's edge. She shares the shell with Milo who hears the words held within. Cadence suspects she's the offered kin? The Depth's Boon may be associated with what's going on with her. Milo will definitely need to think on this, but he agrees to help.
Teagan looks around for Quill and does find him out for a swim, trying to move away undetected. Quill, when called, does emerge and begins to help Teagan and Arkyn move back towards land. Teagan mentions that Quill should come drinking with them some time. Quill responds with a "Sure, sure". Yenush helps Quill get Arkyn and Teagan out of the water. Quill takes Teagan back to his room while Yenush struggles to get a dead-weight Arkyn back. Afterward, Yenush heads to the clinic to drop off a note to Viren. He ducks inside and his arm immediately jerks and locks up.
I don’t believe you received the proper authorization to enter. It is proper to have a warrant.

Aiaoue stays behind at the edge of the pier and calls to Omen who appears a moment later. Aiaoue expressed her happiness at going to bed knowing that, in a way, Alcide is with her and that Omen was looking for her. She hopes to make Omen proud. All you need to do to make me proud is continue to exist. Omen accepts the offered apple crisp.

Is that the Prank Teagan Spoke of?

In the morning, Teagan goes off to the mines and Aiaoue, Milo, and Cadence go to church. Aiaoue offers an apple crisp to Elis. Your messages and signs are coming to me a little delayed, but if the Nehezko can get uncursed, then so will I. There is a faint wave of warmth that washes over Aiaoue. Cadence offers the gift Teagan gave her to Caliban. He either didn't like it or isn't paying attention. Aiaoue moves over to Varoona. So we don't have to talk about how you punished Omen for doing things that you also do to your own city... but apparently you helped Omen when he asked, so thank you. Aiaoue offers half an apple crisp. She feels good about doing the "bigger, better person" thing.
Yenush heads to the Ohn'Lee Clinic to make sure Viren got his note. Upon arrival, Viren is immediately flustered. Yes, he got the note. When Viren pulls out a book in panic, Yenush flips it right-side up. With that resolved, Yenush heads to Ironborn to get his arm upgraded. Has any prosthetic you ever built... talked? Ironborn pauses. What do you mean? Yenush explains that his arm talks from time to time.... and it's kind of problematic. Ironborn asks if Yenush has seen anything in the miasma and if he'd spoken to Khalil. Yenush would rather talk to Ironborn than Khalil. Ironborn notes that there are no enchantments on the arm that would permit speaking. Thus, the origin cannot be from the arm itself. The origin is most likely from Yenush, but manifesting in the arm (or at least Ironborn theorizes).
Aiaoue goes to talk to Viren, finding the riz-less healer face down on his desk. Seeing him disheveled, Aiaoue offers a hug. Time and time again you come back to this. One word, he just needs to say one word. You know he can. Snapping back, Viren seems more relaxed. You're married. Aiaoue nods. HOW? Aiaoue explains that, well, all her family are singers, but she heard this other voice one time. She saw Alcide then and they both startled each other. But he showed her how to fix a net and when her family moved on, she chose to stay. Viren seems mildly dejected; he doesn't think he can sing. Well, what hobby's do you have? Viren blue screens for a second. I... pace... anxiously? You know, I've seen Yenush do this thing where he takes a breath and calms down, I bet he could teach you some breathing exercises.
Oh, and about Yenush and Omarosa... Viren panics. Wait no! Who told you that? Cadence. Viren sets the record straight: Omarosa is with Ademar... she has been for a few years. Oh, it's not a seasonal thing? Viren is confused. Seasonal? Aiaoue explains that her Pa was with her Ma for a season. She sees him from time to time.
Viren shifts gears: what did you come here for? Aiaoue pulls out her homemade pouch with apple crisps and a carnelian in the shape of an apple. This way, Viren can have apples for a long time! And carnelian is said to boost vitality, build confidence, and instill one with courage! Viren seems very happy with the gift and ruffles through his desk, producing a necklace. Viren seems a bit happier (and calmer) as Aiaoue leaves.
Aryn, initially resolved to spend the day in the Theater waiting out his hangover, is disrupted by Cadence and Milo. Can we have the boon? No. Can we have it if we bring it back? No. It's my boon. Would you come WITH us to see Dunebrook? Oh, yeah sure. The trio head to the ruins in the center of town. Dunebrook, after looking at the item and listening to the shell, notes that Eresh would most likely be a goddess of death. Only one with the domain of death could wield such a power over it. Dunebrook suspects Eresh is most likely a death goddess from this continent. Arkyn mentions that he's been called moon boy. Then yours may hold the Domain of Night. If Eresh exists, Dunebrook notes that she would most likely be monstrous, not unlike the four kaiju-like monstrosities that came through the Barrier.
While talking with Dunebrook, Milo notices an almost imperceptible change in the MWD background chorus. A moment later, the sounds of corvids screeching in alarm echo over Legacy. One slams into Arkyn's face in its panic, pulling on his hair. Arkyn, without hesitation, books it after the bird towards the fields. As the group converges, they find that a thin coating of miasma has consumed a portion of the field, sounds of fighting echoing from within. A dwarven woman with a portable MWD stops Arkyn before he can charge recklessly forward. If you're hellbent on going in, take this... kill whatevers making that racket so I can fix that MWD!

Quotes

"Have you tried giving her a pebble?" – Aiaoue to Arkyn

"Are you offended by our kinship?" – Milo to Teagan

Dreams - Milo

The Tower Citadel stands tall, sparkling in the light of the setting sun. You stroll through the familiar streets of Eredet; the often-walked path between work and home. Work brings great rewards, yet there is nothing as rewarding as what awaits you when you return home. The babbling noises of Marcus accompanied by your wife’s laughter. It is your pride and joy; the spark that brings forth inspiration, the drive that keeps you moving forward.
Yet for all they have done for you… you will fail them.
Eredet crumbles around you, leaving only a barren field with tufts of dying grass drifting lazily in a gentle wind, singing a faint echo of a tragic ballad. The smell of iron hits your nostrils. A rusted sword lies impaled in the dirt. A pool of crimson rests just ahead. Your ears begin to ring, and your vision starts to blur. A weight settles on you, sudden and heavy. You are sinking.
In the distance, a silhouette appears. A horse and rider by the shape of it. The figure atop it cloaked, masking all discerning features. Steam radiates off the horse’s flesh. Even from a distance, you can see the horse’s eyes glowing as it chomps at the bit. The figure atop it lowers a lance and not even a second passes before the horse releases an unholy noise as it charges, followed by the silhouettes of hundreds of mounted figures. The ground shakes with the force of their charge and you feel bones pop and break, air drawn forcefully out of your lungs as you are swallowed in a pool of red.

Letters to Milo

Milo,   Took your first letter long enough to arrive! Of course, I don’t blame you. I imagine the Courier service across continents is nowhere near as quick as the Courier service here.   Is not every town smaller than Eredet, hun? I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t fretting and pacing every now and then. The trip might have been strange, but at least you seem enough in one piece to write. Stay safe and… stay dry I suppose? Speaking of, it’s been a bit rainier than normal in Eredet. I suppose that’s a sign that everything is well and truly warming up. I’m well past done with this winter chill.   You kept your word? Hun, I never doubted you! Well, maybe a little bit. Speaking of… A Lady of Life visited the other day. You’ll be happy to hear that Marcus is a strapping young, healthy, bubbly boy. Wager he’s going to have his father’s height! Though, he’s very unhappy about his horns coming in. I think it might be a hair worse than the teething.   If the rain abates, I may book a trip on one of the ferries. I’ve always wanted to be in Tel’Rhea for the Festival of Flowers. Now that I’m a mother, I’ll finally get the royal treatment! And perhaps I’ll show off our bundle of joy to the Queen. Or at least to a larger, more prominent image of the Great Mother.   And I know you’re looking for your story; By The One, I hope you find it! But don’t forget about our story while you’re over there, okay? Don’t worry, I’ll hold down the homestead here in the meantime!   Stay safe, please.   Love,   Chloe.

Milo,   I hope this note finds you in good health and brimming with inspiration. The Gazette eagerly awaits your first written piece – no doubt it will be nothing short of a work of informative and eloquent art.   It’s come to my attention that you’re operating in a bit of a gray area. The hoops a good reporter must jump through to get a story in Dremora are a far distant concept in the uncharted waters of Jalasar, I’d wager. All that to say, I trust you know how to get us a scoop that’ll make the front page.   Sincerely,   Antonio Barvaletti   Senior Editor
