Saxons Demand More Tribute

Political event

Spring A.D. 497

Aetheling Aescwine comes to court and demands tribute on behalf of Essex, while Aetheling Cynric demands tribute on behalf of Wessex.

Lady Ellen held court in Sarum. Aetheling Aescwine was brought in and demanded tribute from Salisbury for Essex. With the council of her knights, Lady Ellen agreed to pay this tribute. Later, however, Aetheling Cynric, in kinder terms, also asked for tribute. With the council of Maylene, it was agreed that they would pay double to Wessex and not pay Kent.
