The arrogance of Cyning Cwichelm gives the people of Salisbury a much needed respite. Sir Felix spends more time with young Lord Robert.
In the previous year, Cwichlem, King of the Angles, declared himself Bretwalda (High King) of all the Saxons and of Britain. This led the other Saxon kings to gather their armies and hire mercenaries to go against him and this meant they did not have the time to harass Salisbury and demand tribute from it. Still, with no king in the land, this was hardly a time of peace and both Sir Felix and Dame Maylene served garrison duty and saw raiding both from the Saxons and from Silchester and Rydychan. Young Lord Robert spent the summer as a guest of Sir Felix at Newton Tony Manor. For their part, the other Saxon kingdoms combined their forces and defeated Cwichelm and the Angles.
