Salak (səˈlæk)

Salak is a small volcanic island located off Saba's west coast. The island never had a large population, but after the destruction of the notorious Sunda Lighthouse, the Malikate forcibly removed all the inhabitants and moved them to an undisclosed location.

Since the relocation, the island has gained a reputation for being haunted. The empty village of Sunda invites all manner of ghost stories, and the phantom of the lighthouse itself is well known to sailors that pass near Salak. The Malikate has maintained a light blockade of the island, warning off any ships that look like they may wish to land there. Some sailors claim that they have seen lights moving along the shores of Salak at night, and believe that the ghosts of shipwrecked sailors are wandering the coast.

Geography

The island is dominated by the central volcano, Jabal Aleasifa. It is known for the unusual number of storms that form around the mountain's peak, and how they can suddenly sweep down the mountain with devastating force. These storms were the cause of many shipwrecks in the vicinity of Salak, and warning ships of the dangerous regions was the reason the Sunda Lighthouse was originally built.

The island is unstable, with earthquakes and landslides being fairly common. Additionally, fresh water is hard to come by, with only one freshwater spring on the island, near where the old village of Sunda was built. Jabal Aleasifa is an active volcano, and eruptions occur every few decades.
