Southern Region

The Southern Region of the Great Ring has several island groups. The most prominent of these is Atuao'umi, located in the center of the region and containing the giant islands of Motu and Atu Motu. This region includes locations and cultures inspired by Polynesia and Indonesia, and is intended for adventures rooted in the mythology of these islands. This article is intended to help players and GMs who are playing a game in this region of the world.

Races & Cultures

There are two playable races who have large populations in the Southern Region - Humans, and Kikipua. The cultures present are listed below.

Languages

There are many language spoken in the Southern Region; here are a list of the most common ones.

Geography

Like the other major regions within the Great Ring, the Southern Region contains many island and island groups. The most significant island group is called Atuao'umi, and contains the two largest island in the region, Motu and Atu Motu. The other major groups are:

  • The Mangimoi Archipelago
  • The Nûrîka Group
  • The Rekauri Archipelago

There are also several other islands that are not a part of any particular group, such as Kaoh and Koa'ki. Those islands closer to The Middlesea are known to have strange and supernatural qualities to them, and voyagers who visit the Middlesea itself return with wild stories to tell.

Many of the islands are intentionally left undescribed to serve as 'blank spaces' on the map where players and GMs can invent their own stories and details. When making your character, I would suggest looking through the list of cultures above, and then reading about the regions where that culture lives.

In the coordinates system of the Great Ring, the Southern region encompasses the region south of the 20th degree north, and between the 25th degree east and the 25th degree west.

A Note on Cultural Inspiration

All of the cultures listed here include a note about what real-world culture inspired them. However, I have taken many liberties with my adaptation, and the resulting fictional cultures may only vaguely resemble their real-world counterpart.
