Turrhēnoi Islands (turˈr̥ɛːnoi ˈaɪlənds)

The Turrhēnoi Islands are a group of seven small islands in the Rasrathnian Sea. They are famous as the location where the god Zoí Epáno sent the wayward winds, the spirits of the air that he considered too unruly and destructive to remain in the Kaphtor Islands. Using their true names (for Zoí Epáno knew the names of all the spirits of the air and wind), he bound them to the Turrhēnoi Islands so that they would trouble the Kaphtori no more. But winds are hard to contain, and there are frequent gales and windstorms that escape the confines of the islands to wreak havoc upon islands and ships in the Rasrathnian Sea.

The most famous and destructive of the wayward winds is the Rukk, which manifests as a furious tornado or hurricane in the shape of a gigantic bird of prey. This storm is unparalleled in its destructive power, and has been known to seize huge ships and enormous whales and carry them high into the sky before dropping them to crash upon the waters below.

Some sailors claim to know the names of some winds, and the ways in which they can be summoned. The names of the winds are whistled, not spoken, and the would-summoner must also know the correct ritual to use in conjunction with the name. While in most cases this is exaggerated, there are some sailors who do seem to know how to summon a wayward wind from the Turrhēnoi Islands - this is an example of sailor-specific Folk Magic. If anyone knows the name and ritual to summon the great Rukk, they haven't shared it yet.

Geography

The Turrhēnoi Islands are a volcanic arc off the northern coast of Trinacria. There are seven main islands, and no permanent living inhabitants. The islands are bare rock, scoured clean by the incessant winds. The shores are without sand or small rocks, and no soil remains that could have been blown away. It is virtually impossible to visit the islands to gain more detail - the winds are so powerful that any ship that attempts to approach is either blown away or destroyed.
