Undead Mage

Undead Mages are a type of Monster created from the corpse of a humanoid spellcaster through powerful necromantic magic. Unlike Zombies, Ghouls, and most other undead, they have full control of their faculties and are capable of rational thought. Mages reanimated by The Plague-Death or otherwise against their will are driven by an instinctive hatred of living things, whereas those who accept undeath willingly retain the same personalities they had in life. In the Nation of Imaskar, much of the ruling class consists of Undead Mages, some of whom have been slain and reanimated more than once.
