Inquisition

The Inquisition is a canon organization, detailed here in Lexicanum. This article provides additional fanon details and specifics.   The Holy Orders of the Emperor's Inquisition, more commonly known as the Inquisition, are the powerful secret police of the Imperium responsible for guarding the souls of humanity. The purpose of the Inquisition is to identify and destroy the myriad of potential threats to the Imperium and humanity. Such is the Inquisition's power that it answers only to the Emperor.   Because of the unique gifts of the Daughters of Verity, Inquisitors find their members useful and have employed individual members throughout the Prelature's history as agents. In recent years, the Daughters have become the de facto personal army of Inquisitor Danforth Laertes.

Structure

Ranks

The Inquisition is less heirarchical and formally-structured than many organizations in the Imperium, especially the military and Ecclesiarchy. Nevertheless, there is a rank structure within the Inquisition although individual agents and members act with significant autonomy.
Inquisitor
The seniormost agents and full members of the organization, Inquisitors are secret policemen and intelligence agents devoted to the protection of the Imperium. Opposing the three-fold evils of the alien, the witch, and the traitor their remit is to fight Chaos, uncover treasonous plots, and defeat the plans of the Xenos. The authority of an Inquisitor is limitless and he may overrule or ignore any portion of the Lex Imperialis and demand fealty and obedience from any Imperial citizen, soldier, or agent in the performance of his duties. This physical symbol of this authority is the Inquisitorial Rosette, a small icon of the symbol of the Inquisition, which shows the bearer speaks with the voice of the God-Emperor Himself. Rosettes are often inscribed with verification technology and coded encryption in order to communicate the bearer's authority to any cogitator, confirming the bearer's clearance as well as preventing forgeries. Known as the omniclavis most include a master-key which will open any lock or grant access to any system using known Imperial technology.
Acolyte
The many and varied servants of Inquisitors are called Acolytes. Lacking the full authority of an Inquisitor they are nevertheless powerful and respected servants of the Imperium. Depending on the needs of an individual Inquisitor, Acolytes can be drawn from any of the Imperium's many organizations and seconded to his service or - in rarer cases - can be recruited directly into the Inquisition from the Schola Progenium or even civilian life. Members of the Astra Militarum, Ecclesiarchy priests, Navigators, sanctioned psykers whether primaris or astropaths, even Magi of the Adeptus Mechanicus or Sisters from the various Orders of the Adepta Sororitas can be recruited. It is exceptionally rare but not unheard of for an Astartes of the Space Marines to become an Acolyte.
