Datan Gor

Datan Gor, or the Iron Pit in dwarvish, is the largest of the dwarven settlements and is built in the craterous remains of an ancient meteor strike.

Two millennia ago, the dwarves it is rumored discovered the crater when mining operations punched a hole through the interior wall. Immediately seeing the potential for a grand dwarven city, dwarves poured into the area to assist in correcting the one flaw the pit had...it was not underground.

The greatest dwarven engineers and stone workers were employed to dome-over the pit and bury it a hundred feet or more below the surface. The sides of the crater were excavated to provide concentric terraces where buildings, public spaces, and other civic structures could be erected and installed. The spoil from these excavations were heaped around the rim of the crater, waiting to later be pushed on top of the dome currently under construction.

Within a decade the dome was complete and the city enclosed - all without a single column to interrupt the view across the newly created cavern. Most of the City's government structures, to include the massive declinators (angled elevators) and a good number of the larger commercial structures were also complete in this period.

Until the completion of the Tauran capitol of Labyrinth, Datan Gor was considered the pinnacle of dwarven engineering.
