Queen Aurala ir'Wynarn

Her Majesty, Queen of Aundair

Aundair's current monarch, Queen Aurala has held the throne for 26 years. Known as a peacemaker and diplomat for her nation, she still deals with her court and personal relationships with an iron fist.     Aurala took the throne in 980 YK at age 23, and inherited a nation that had been ruined by war. The sheer attrition of decades of war, plus the long time required to train adepts, magewrights, and other skilled personnel (as well as to raise dragonhawks) meant that replacing losses was difficult and time-consuming, particularly when compared to Thrane's huge peasant levy infantry or even the animation of Karrnathi bone knights. The quality of Aundairian troops, formerly the highest among the Five Nations (Karrnathi would disagree), had been degraded over the long war and their arcane support was at its lowest ebb. A respite was desperately needed as Aundair could not afford to continue the war of attrition with its more heavily populated neighbors.   The new Queen's desperation was reflected in a coordinated peace effort, even before the Day of Mourning. On the one hand she sent her most skilled and intelligent diplomats to her enemies seeking a ceasefire, instructing them to at the very least, delay as long as possible any new outbreaks of war. On the other she quickly contacted the Valenar elves, the Talenta halflings, and the pirate barons of the Lhazaar Principalities, about hiring mercenaries to supplement her own troops. Her actions achieved their intended results. Over the next several years Aundairian forces gained time to recover some measure of their morale, expertise, and numbers. As Breland, Cyre, Karrnath and Thrane wore out one another with regular assaults, Aundair ceased offensive operations, entrenched and rebuilt.     By the time the destruction of Cyre pushed the other nations into a ceasefire, it had been over a year since the last skirmish between Aundair and Breland, and longer since Aundair had launched any major offensives. This may have made some rulers look week, but Aurala proved a better diplomat than general, and leveraged the nation into a prime position in The Treaty of Thronehold. When discussing Cyre's participation in the negotiations, Aurala successfully argued against it, by simply saying "Cyre no longer exists". Aurala used the negotiations to lobby for the return of the city of Thaliost from Thrane, but was unsuccessful, and the Treaty kept the current existing borders of Aundair and Thrane.

Personal Life

Aurala is married to Sasik d'Vadalis, who gave up his House Vadalis position to become a member of the Aundairian nobility. As a result of this, Aurala is often accused of favoritism towards House Vadalis but she tries to ensure that Vadalis receives no special treatment. In addition to her spouse, she has three children, and the extended royal family also consists of her three remaining siblings. Aurad ir'Wynarn is her chief advisor and governor of Fairhaven, while Adal ir'Wynarn was the the Aundairian First Warlord and Minister of Magic, before a coup attempt ended with his execution.   Aurala also often meets with Esravash d'Lyrandar and Zellandria d'Orien, the matriarchs of House Lyrandar and Orien, to discuss current events and take respite from the cutthroat social circles of noble court.
