Fiirdaen Forest

Geography

Fiirdaen Forest is located on a hilly raised region north of The Hrakken Empire, east of Lokain, and west of Shrask.  It receives a lot of rain which pools and spills into Fiirdaen River, which carries the water north.

Fauna & Flora

About half the trees in Fiirdaen Forest are deciduous in nature, the other half being conifers.  Small bushes and brambles cover most of the ground, making it difficult to move large armies through the forest.   Deer, wolves, bears, and other woodland beasts can be found in the forest.   Over the years, various necromancers have released or commanded them to enter the forest.  Groups of these undead now wander the forest and inhabit old ruins and forgotten glades.   Gilseeks, Forest Halflings, and Humans call the forest home, living in small villages and in hillside caves.    The Forest Halflings keep a low profile, hiding their villages from Raskan slavers, Hrakken necromancers, and the beasts of the forest alike. Their build their homes beneath the roots of trees, usually on top of hills.  It is speculated that the Halflings of Fiirdaen are more closely related to Hill Halflings than those in other forests.   Gilseek caves can be found in the deep dark parts of the forest, far from interference from other sapient races.  The subsist on the animals of the forest, fleeing when coming into contact with anything threatening.   Many villages live in fear of Raskan slavers from Shrask, who conduct raids of Lokish villages across the Fiirdaen River.  The Lokish sometimes organize their own raids in retribution, kidnapping or killing Shasite villagers on Shrask's side of the river.  Occasionally a Hrakken necromancer will come to the forest to acquire new bodies or servants and the rulers of Fiirbakk have often collected "tribute" from villages within their sphere of influence.  Most of the Human villages are either Lokish or Shasite.

History

Throughout the years, many groups have sought to claim or fortify the forest.  Broken towers and fallen fortresses can be found throughout the forest, sitting on forgotten hills overlooking villages reclaimed by nature.  At some point in its history, its goblin population was wiped out.  It is believed that this occurred some time near The Years of Blood, but is likely it may have happened much earlier.
