Arcane Brotherhood
The Arcane Brotherhood was a mercantile company and wizards' guild that operated out of the Host Tower of the Arcane in Luskan. The organization was shrouded in mystery, as even its most high-ranking members were unknown. It was known however that their original primary goal was the political and economic control of the North.
In the 15th century, the Arcane Brotherhood reformed to be more altruistic and based around the study of magic, however many members of the Lords' Alliance still held reservations about the Brotherhood's true motives.
History
The Arcane Brotherhood was formed in 1311 with the intent of conquering the North. It began by first dominating Luskan's trade, and then the Luskan itself in 1357. In 1361, the Brotherhood conquered the island of Ruathym but were forced to return it after threats of war from the Lords' Alliance.
In 1373, a cabal of dragons, including the white dragon Arauthator and the black dragon Waervaerendor, attacked the Arcane Brotherhood's Host Tower, stealing a hoard of magical items and research.
In 1376, a group of Waterdavian captains, adventurers, and mercenaries invaded Luskan with the intent of deposing the Arcane Brotherhood. They succeeded, effectively removing the Arcane Brotherhood's influence.
A few decades later, the Arcane Brotherhood reformed with the intent of focusing solely on magical research and study and staying away from politics. The leadership of Luskan was hesitant at first, but over time gradually came to accept this new version of the Brotherhood.
In 1492, during the Great Dragon War, the Breadwinners rescued the Arcane Brotherhood member Maccath the Crimson from Arauthator. After freeing her, Maccath convinced the Arcane Brotherhood to join the Council of Waterdeep in stopping the Cult of the Dragon from summoning Tiamat. Maccath was selected to represent the Brotherhood on the Council of Waterdeep. Members of the Arcane Brotherhood fought in both the Battle of Hardbuckler and the Battle at the Well of Dragons alongside the Flaming Fist of Baldur's Gate.
