Blackstaves

The Blackstaves were a group of highly skilled magic users under the direction of the Blackstaff, operating out of Blackstaff Tower in Waterdeep with the express goal of protecting Waterdeep from external magical threats.

Public Agenda

While the Watchful Order of Magists and Protectors regulates magic within the walls of Waterdeep, there are often threats too powerful, too external, or too dangerous for WOMP to handle. In those cases, the Blackstaves are sent in to deal with it.
Many of the threats the Blackstaves deal with are also deemed too dangerous for the wider world to know about, and the details of many of their operations are kept under wraps.

History

In the early 1490's, Blackstaves accompanied the forces of the Council of Waterdeep to fight in the Great Dragon War.
In late 1496 and early 1497, the Blackstaff Vajra Safahr dispatched Blackstaves across the Sword Coast North to find erase all traces of the Banesmark, which had resurfaced again as part of the Banesmark Crisis. Blackstaves sought out those with the mark and magically removed them, chalking up its appearance to that of a Shadowfell parasite.
