Burney was the alias used by the
copper dragon Balarystul while they were acting as a spy for the draconic god Bahamut in
Avernus.
History
At some point in the mid-15th century CR, Burney was dispatched by Bahamut to Avernus to spy on the goings on of Avernus and
Tiamat in particular. Burney ingratiated herself with
Mahadi, the founder of the
Wandering Emporium, and was brought on as a barber in the caravan. As a barber, Burney was well known for telling wonderful stories that suited the needs of each client, with a propensity for subtly encouraging the people she treated to pursue acts of forgiveness or good.
In 1497, Burney met the
Lost Star Detectives, who were attempting to end the
Damnation of Elturel. As Burney gave the Detectives haircuts and provided healing,
Kinsey Eridanus became convinced that the
Orb of Dragonkind the group was carrying should be given to Burney for safekeeping, having a hunch that Burney was more than she let on. After some convincing the group opted to offer the orb to Burney, who readily accepted it, taking it to Bahamut directly for safekeeping. In exchange, Burney covertly gave the Detectives a Sunblade, a Tome of Clear Thought, and a token bearing Bahamut and
Torm's symbols, promising the Detectives aid if they used the token to pray with.
After the Detectives left, Burney continued to travel with the Wandering Emporium. However, during the
Battle of Elturel,
Katya Sinaran used the emblem to call for aid, and Burney was summoned to the city in her true form as a copper dragon. For the duration of the battle, Burney flew around the borders of the city, using her acid breath and talons to prevent demons or devils from entering the city. When Elturel was returned to the
Material Plane, Burney came with it, but flew off the moment the city returned her mission done.
As her cover in Avernus had been spoiled, it is presumed she did not return to Hell, but her current whereabouts are unknown.
