Mahadi

Mahadi

Mahadi is the enigmatic founder and operator of the Wandering Emporium, a traveling caravan and neutral resting spot in the otherwise dismal plane of Avernus in the Nine Hells.   Mahadi also operates his own restaurant and spa within the Wandering Emporium called the Infernal Rapture, which exists within its own demiplane, free from the food spoiling effects of the rest of Avernus. Visiting patrons need only sign a contract with Mahadi to recieve some of the highest quality service in the plane.   While Mahadi appears to be human, his true nature is that of a rakshasa, though he had long mastered the art of hiding or misdirecting people away from his reversed hands.

History

After forming the Wandering Emporium at some point in the past, Mahadi met the hollyphant Lulu in the early 15th century. Lulu had been recently freed from her imprisonment in the Bloody Cyst, and was attempting to find a way to leave Avernus. Recognizing the value in a hollyphant's tusk, Mahadi drugged Lulu with water from the River Styx, muddying her memory and leaving her docile while he ground down her tusks as they grew back.   After some time, Mahaid learned that Zariel, Archduke of Avernus, had a connection in her past to a hollyphant, and so Mahadi presented Lulu to her as a gift, fending off an attack by the warlord Bitter Breath along the way.   Decades later, in 1497, Mahadi would again meet Lulu, who was traveling with the Lost Star Detectives, a group of adventurers seeking to end the Damnation of Elturel. While Mahadi alluded to a shared history, the effects of the Styx are long, and Lulu did not remember Mahadi or what he had done to her. The Detectives made use of the amenities the emporium had to offer, including a few agreeing to dine and relax at the Infernal Rapture, and made a deal with the emporium's barber Burney that they kept secret from Mahadi, before leaving.
