Theodard Silverstring is a
halfling man and the current chief librarian of the
Silverstring Library in
Elturel, which was named in his honor.
History
Born in 1373 in Elturel, Theodard originally studied for an administrative position in Elturel's government before finding himself drawn to the Elturel Library. Over the decades, Theodard went from a library assistant to librarian to being promoted to chief librarian in the mid-15th century.
The appearance of the
Companion over Elturel after the
Reign of Vampires drew many newcomers to Elturel, including
Vela and
Caelum Eridanus, members of the
Emerald Enclave sent to study the artificial sun. The Eridanuses also arrived with their daughter
Kinsey, who endeavored to joined the enclave like her parents. To that end, Kinsey began frequenting the Elturel Library looking for books on all types of knowledge. Theodard pointed Kinsey in the right direction, and Kinsey started to view Theodard, or "Theo" as she called him, as a sort of mentor figure, even wearing plain glass glasses to mimic his prescription lenses.
Theodard was in Elturel on the 2nd of Eleasis, 1497, when the entire city was
damned to
Avernus in the
Nine Hells. As the city fell to chaos,
cultists of Zariel began raiding the Elturel Library, destroying the building and stealing books to burn in large bonfires. Unable to defend the library, Theodard and
Xanhorn Mistmore, a historian and frequenter of the library, locked themselves in Theodard's office for their own safety.
The two of them were found there by the
Lost Star Detectives, which included Kinsey and Xanhorn's younger sister
Xifira. Theodard was unwilling to leave the books alone, and so the Detectives helped transport the remaining books that they could to
High Hall for safe keeping, along with Theodard.
Theodard remained with the other refugees in High Hall for the duration of Elturel's damnation, and hid in its catacombs during the
Battle of Elturel.
Following Elturel's salvation, Theodard returned to head the Elturel Library, which was undergoing extensive repairs, as was the rest of the city. Due to Kinsey's role in saving the city, the rebuilt library was planned on being renamed to the Kinsey Eridanus Library, but Kinsey refused, instead asking that the library be named after Theodard, its long-running custodian. The city agreed, and Theodard's name was engraved above the entrance to the building he had given his life to.
