Triton Praetorium

The Triton Praetorium is the primary government of the triton people on Toril. A military government, the praetorium and all of its resources are structred entirely around keeping the eternal threat of the sahuagin, aboleths, and other ancient aquatic enemies of the triton at bay.

Military

All triton of the praetorium are expected to serve in the military when they reach adulthood and remain there for quite some time. Those that cannot fight or have other nonmartial skills are still drafted and put to work creating weapons, managing supply lines, or serving in other support roles. Because of this, it is rare to find a triton without some combat experience and the entire nation can theoretically be drafted in the event of a crisis.

Religion

While triton are not generally religious, associating themselves with no creator diety or pantheon, the triton reverance for the Great Conch is often mistaken for a religion by outsiders. The Great Conch contains the collected memories of the entire triton people, both from the praetorium and outside of it, and is protected by the Maluhada, an organization whose members are pulled from all triton governments across the Material Plane and the Elemental Plane of Water. While the Maluhada is not an overseeing government body, the advice and wisdom dispensed by it are treated extremely seriously by all triton governments, the praetorium included.   Additionally, because of the praetorium's miltary structure, many triton from it are often recognized by the conch for acts of great heroism and valor and thereby bestowed a last name by the Maluhada, the greatest honor a triton can recieve.

Foreign Relations

The Triton Praetorium rarely communicates with surface people and governments. As the triton are engaged in endless war against their enemies, the praetorium generally views surface dwellers as unfitting for underwater combat and ungrateful for the work the praetorium does in keeping Toril safe. For their part, surface folk see this attitude by the triton as haughtiness, further seperating the two peoples.   The Praetorium does maintain relations with the other good- and neutral-aligned races of the ocean, such as sea elves, another ancient enemy of the sahuagin, but again the praetorium's structure and commitment solely to war causes them to view other races as useful allies in hard times but otherwise too soft to truly commit to keeping the oceans safe.
