Population: 9 × 108 = 900,000,000   Remarks: Fl Fluid Hydrographics (in place of water) He Hellworld Ph Pre-High Population   Travel Zone: No Restrictions   Travellers' Aid Society Rating: Green Overview Pourne is a planet that balances its challenges with a moderate level of significance within the Tlaiowaha subsector. Its importance stems from its strategic location, advanced technology, and the unique resources found in its hazardous environment.   Key Characteristics Starport (A):Pourne has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.   Pourne maintains a large downport with trade and ship repair facilities, but its main star port is at Pournelle Station-1, one of the colonies at the L5 orbit point. The planet has a large (3000 km diameter) moon, Baen, orbiting at 400,000 km distance. There are a total of 30 stations at the L4 and L5 points, all of a similar design, housing the rich members of Pourne's society.   Size (9): Pourne is a large planet, approximately 14,400 kilometers in diameter, with a surface gravity of 1.25G. The higher gravity presents challenges for visitors but is manageable with the right technology.   Atmosphere (B): The thin, tainted atmosphere requires respirators or other breathing apparatus for prolonged exposure. The taint results from industrial pollutants and the planet's natural chemical composition, making air filtration systems essential for habitation.   Hydrographics (2): With only 20% of the surface covered by oceans, Pourne's water bodies consist of heavily contaminated fluids such as ammonia, hydrocarbons, and other exotic liquids. These fluids are both a hazard and a resource, necessitating advanced processing technologies.   Population (8): Pourne supports hundreds of millions of sophonts, who live in densely populated, technologically advanced cities designed to shield them from the harsh environment. The population relies heavily on imported goods and technologies to sustain their way of life.   Government (8): The planet is governed by civil service bureaucracies that manage resources, maintain order, and ensure the population's survival. This bureaucratic structure is necessary to handle the complexities of living in such a challenging environment.   Law Level (7): Pourne has a high law level, with strict regulations and enforcement to maintain order and ensure the efficient use of limited resources. Security forces are well-trained and equipped to handle both internal and external threats.   Tech Level (A): With a tech level of 10, Pourne possesses advanced technological capabilities essential for maintaining life support systems, processing contaminated water, and supporting industrial activities.   Economics (C7B+2) Resource Extraction: Pourne's economy is heavily reliant on the extraction and processing of valuable chemicals and minerals from its exotic oceans. These resources are essential for trade and provide the planet with necessary imports and technological goods.   Economic Challenges: Despite its advanced technology, the planet faces significant economic challenges due to its inhospitable environment. Maintaining and upgrading the necessary infrastructure is costly, and the need for continuous import of high-tech goods drives up expenses.   Subsidies and Trade: The government offers subsidies and incentives to industries that can efficiently extract and process resources. Pourne engages in robust trade with neighboring systems, exporting its unique resources in exchange for advanced technology and other essential goods.   Culture [8A5A] Adaptation and Resilience: The culture of Pourne is marked by resilience and adaptability. The inhabitants have developed a strong sense of community and resourcefulness, essential for surviving in their harsh environment.   Technological Integration: Technology is deeply integrated into daily life. From advanced environmental control systems to personal protective gear, technology shapes how the population interacts with their world and each other.   Bureaucratic Influence: The civil service bureaucracies that govern Pourne play a significant role in shaping cultural norms. Efficiency, order, and compliance are highly valued, and there is a strong emphasis on collective responsibility for the common good.   Environmental Awareness: Given the planet's environmental challenges, there is a heightened awareness and respect for ecological balance. Recycling, conservation, and sustainable practices are deeply ingrained in the culture, with citizens actively participating in efforts to mitigate environmental impact.

Geography

Notable Features Fluidic Environment: Pourne's oceans are composed of heavily contaminated water and exotic liquids, making them hazardous. Specialized technology is required to extract and process these fluids safely, which are used in various industrial and commercial applications.   Urban Habitats: The population resides in large, fortified cities with advanced life support systems and infrastructure. These urban centers are self-contained and highly regulated to protect inhabitants from environmental hazards.   Resource Management: Efficient management of resources is crucial on Pourne. The government enforces strict regulations to ensure that resources are used effectively and sustainably, with a focus on recycling and waste management.   The planet has a large (3000 km diameter) moon, Baen, orbiting at 400,000 km distance. There are a total of 30 stations at the L4 and L5 points, all of a similar design, housing the rich members of Pourne's society.

Climate

Pournelle is a large, cold, unpleasant world with a corrosive atmosphere of methane and ammonia. Its hydrographics (20%) consist of Ammonia ice-caps at the poles.

History

Pourne (Alternate name: Pournelle) is a non-aligned fluidic hellworld located in the Tlaiowaha Subsector of the Trojan Reach.   Pourne was formerly a member of the Kingdom of Drinax, until the Kingdom was shattered in a war with the Aslan Hierate.   Pourne hopes to negotiate entry into either the Imperium or the Hierate as equal trading partners.   If Drinax would come back to power it would join them first, Imperium second, Hierate last.
