Maria Collins Carbonell Stark
Maria Stark was a socialite and philanthropist, who married the industrialist Howard Stark. The couple had one child, Tony Stark.
She met Howard Stark in the Casino de Monte-Carlo: her father insisted she be accompanied by a bodyguard, who's job was, in part to prevent her from losing too much at the tables. Howard witnessed an argument between them and believing Maria was being harrassed, stepped in to protect her.
Although he was almost 30 years her senior, and had a reputation as a womanizer, she was immediately charmed by him, and they became engaged only a few months later.
The relationship was tempestuous, but genuinely loving. Maria had known from the first that Howard would not be faithful to her, and was rarely bothered by his serial infidelity: the only serious bone of contention between them was Tony, and Howard's coldness towards him.
She was responsible for introducing Obadiah Stane to Howard: although she was never actually unfaithful (unlike Howard), she enjoyed having friendships with men who were openly attracted to her, usually of her own age or younger, and Odabiah was one of these friends, who she recognised as having genuine tallent.
In 1991, HYDRA sent the Winter Soldier to assassinate Howard Stark and steal his recreation of the Super-Soldier Serum, and Maria was also killed in the attack.
