Super-Soldier Serum
The Super-Soldier Serum is the name given to a chemical solution first invented by Dr Abraham Erskine, and the various attempts which have been made since to replicate or build upon Dr Erskine's work.
With the exception of the Red Room Formulation, the serum is ineffective or even useless when used alone. Instead, it must be combined with some kind of energy. The original Erskine Formulation used when Erskine termed 'vita rays'. The exact nature of these vita rays were not shared by Erskine with his colaborators, and when his records of the experiment were lost, the secret to replicating the Erskine Formulation was also lost.
The differences in later interations of the Serum are primarily due to different theories of what the vita rays might have been. The Zola Formulation used energy from the Tesseract, while the Banner-Ross uses gamma radiation.
Humans are not the only species to create Super-Soldiers (most notably, the Kree are known for the genetic experimentation, and the original Inhumans were the result of Kree attempts to create super-soldiers from early humans, and Thanos was known to have experimented on his children, especially his daughters) but only human Super-Soldiers use the Serum in their creation.
