Washington Monument

The Washington Monument is an hollow Egyptian-style stone obelisk located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. It was built to commemorate George Washington, the first President of the United States. Construction began in 1848. The finished monument opened in 1888.

The monument is the world's tallest stone structure and the tallest obelisk, standing 554 feet tall. It was the world's tallest structure between 1884 and 1889, when the Eiffel Tower was constructed.

The interior contains stairs and an elevator which lead up to the pyramidion, which has has eight observation windows, two per side.

In 2016, the monument was damaged when Ned Leeds, visiting on a school trip, took a modified Chitauri Energy Core into the monument, and it exploded.

The explosion damaged the elevator, trapping a number of students inside. They were rescued by Peter Parker, who also had to fight off the Police, who assumed he was responsible for the explosion and sent an armed helicopter to stop him from entering the monument.

As a result of the explosion, the monument closed for repairs, not reopening fully until September 2019.
