V - Talos, The Clockwork King
When the world was young the gods set about the laborious task of shaping Midgaros to their liking; mountains were made, and large swathes of land were carved out to form the lakes, rivers, and seas. Such a monumental undertaking taxed even the gods who turned to Helmdain, Father of the Forge for a solution.
The Father of the Forge built a machine powered by starlight and set it to the task of molding the world to suit the fancies of the gods. Pleased with the device he had fashioned Helmdain presented his creation to his fellow gods, who while skeptical at first soon warmed to the idea of letting the machine do the work for them.
However, the XVI - Beldohr, Architech of the Heavens saw even greater potential in Helmdain’s creation than even its creator could have foreseen. For as the machine toiled ceaselessly at its task it began to rebuild itself to better suit its purpose; limbs were built to help shape the world and when the machine’s colossal size obstructed it from completing the minute details of its work the device built smaller versions of itself more limited in scope that could perform the job.
It was the device’s ability to replicate itself that gave the gods pause, as at the rate it was making copies it would soon overrun both Midgaros and the Heavens. As the gods debated as to what should be done about Helmdain’s creation a new voice emerged from amongst their numbers, the machine itself!
Shocked at the revelation that Helmdain’s creation had gained sentience, this new revelation put the gods into an uproar. Was the device alive? Did it think itself a god? These thoughts raced like wildfire throughout the pantheon, till finally cooler heads paused to listen to what the machine had to say.
The task that had been set before the construct had been full of contradictions and abstract concepts that as an unthinking machine it was incapable of achieving. Therefore, to fulfill its purpose Helmdain's creation had gained sentience. With its newly emerged mind new thoughts and ideas began to populate, including the idea that shaping Midgaros had originally been the work of the gods. In order to complete its purpose, the machine must become a god and thus, Talos, the Clockwork King was born.
The Clockwork King is unique as unlike the rest of the pantheon it was elevated to godhood by its own actions, the exact details of which Talos has thus far been unwilling to share. The construct dislikes the chaotic nature of Midgaros and spends much of its time focused on perfecting its own creations.
Artificers and inventors seeking to perfect often beseech the Clockwork King, who provides its blessing to those who will best serve its interests in the material plane. His clergy are few and far between with an unsurprising number of sentient constructs among their ranks.
