Session 5 - Fort Pentanos
General Summary
Dendro and Gustav returned from their arduous scouting mission, their minds abuzz with strategies to conquer Fort Trevalay. Eager to uncover the truth behind a report of a wounded ranger, they stumbled upon a mysterious encounter—a Will'o'Wisp lurking in the shadows. Alais swiftly dispatched the ethereal creature, but the eerie encounter took its toll on his stomach, leaving him nauseous and unsteady.
Journeying back to the safety of the Kobold Caverns, their path intersected with a horrifying sight—a Troll feasting upon the remains of rangers and gnolls. Gustav's mighty blade cleaved through the monstrous creature, but the macabre scene left an indelible mark on their minds. Among the grisly aftermath, they discovered Crag Claw, a gnoll survivor whom they took captive for further interrogation.
A foreboding sickness struck Sol, weakening his resolve. Recognizing the urgency, the group sought the healing magic of Lena, a skilled practitioner. With her discerning expertise, Lena identified the affliction as an infection caused by Giant Wasp larvae and demonstrated the surgical extraction method to remove the insidious eggs.
After a night of restorative sleep, the heroes awakened renewed and determined. Their path led them to a secluded clearing, where peculiar wooden creatures toiled ceaselessly. Overseeing their mechanical motions was Leota, a mystical woman gifted with the power of divination. Within her enigmatic presence, Gustav acquired a loyal tar elemental named Grippy, and Leota foretold of their return, promising aid once their raid on the ranger fort was complete.
On their journey back to the caverns, an unexpected encounter awaited them—two fearsome Owlbears barring their path. Choosing to evade the looming danger, they deftly sneak away.
As the fateful morning of the raid arrived, the group divided into three formidable teams. Sol led Team Distraction, comprised of Oaklan, Flekk, Shicka, and Vash. Gustav spearheaded Team Sabotage, accompanied by Dendro, Garret, Lena, and Harl. Finally, Team Rescue, under Alais' guidance, featured Mortem, Giran, Pentanos, Aldor, Whimsy, and Skinny.
Simultaneously, all three teams unleashed a coordinated assault on the fortress. Oaklan's thunderous boulders rained down upon the gnoll defenders, while Gustav charged with unyielding determination to dismantle the giant crossbows. Gnoll Archers and Gnoll Scouts fell in droves as the heroes exploited the element of surprise to pierce the enemy's defenses. However, the tides shifted when a menacing Minotaur turned the tables, targeting Dendro with a devastating crossbow shot. Vash succumbed to the arrows of Sharptooth. In their darkest hour, Flekk and Lena channeled their restorative magic, reviving their fallen comrades and fueling the determination to press onward.
Amidst the chaotic fray, Alais and his team covertly infiltrated the fortress through the northern entrance, their objective clear—to liberate any remaining captive Twilight Sentinels. Witnessing the battle unfolding in the distance, Alais dispatched Aldor, Giran, and Pentanos to provide reinforcements to their comrades. Ascending the tower within the fortress, Alais discovered three imprisoned rangers, but obtaining the keys required a treacherous search. Mortem and Whimsy valiantly engaged a formidable minotaur while Alais confronted Bone Rattle, the gnoll commander who held the fort in his grasp.
Just as the intensity of the conflict reached its zenith, a black dragon named Indrayna emerged from the tower's pinnacle, its ominous presence casting a shadow of dread. Unleashing a torrent of acid, the reptilian beast wrought devastation upon the invaders. Dendro, Garret, and Mortem fell unconscious under the dragon's assault, while Pentanos met an untimely demise. Sol tapped into his formidable psychic powers, obliterating Sharptooth, while Alais delivered a final, decisive blow to Bone Rattle, who erupted in a maelstrom of corrosive acid. Tragically, Aldor too fell in the midst of the chaos.
In a climactic showdown, Gustav confronted the black dragon, drawing forth his mighty axe to challenge the creature head-on. With unyielding resolve, he struck the final blow, felling the monstrous adversary and securing their hard-fought victory.
Yet, amidst the echoes of triumph, the bittersweet mourning for Pentanos and Aldor weighed heavy upon their hearts. In a cathartic moment of grief, Alais's anguished cry pierced the sky, a desperate plea that somehow defied fate. Miraculously, Aldor's life was restored, an ethereal testament to his selfless sacrifice. In honor of their fallen comrade, the group made a solemn decision, renaming the fortress as Fort Pentanos—a testament to valor and a lasting tribute to the heroism that defined their journey.
