Laura Heywood-Floyd

M'Lady

Squadron Leader Laura Hazel Heywood-Floyd, CGM DFM DSM LVO, Viscountess Teesides (a.k.a. Hoover)

Laura Heywood-Floyd, Viscountess Teeside, is the commander of the long suffering forward air controllers attached to the Solent rifles. Having been a helicopter pilot and then a forward air controller for the Queen's Own Anti-Revolutionary Company as part of a heavy lift wing for the air force, that was nominally posted out in the styxs of the right flank of the Commonwealth. She was retained by Alastair Macgregor for the purposes of FAC, within the new regiment.   Awarded with the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal in 2974, when she was shot down over Loch Katrine during the ending phase of the Scottish Revolt. The Mustang helicopter she was flying, performing over-watch for the sections sent in to arrest the leaders of the revolt, was hit by several guided surface to air missiles, taking out the engine and the collective linkage control. Barely making an controlled autorotation landing, Heywood-Floyd's seat did its job and protected her from the impact, leaving her as the only one of the five crew members left capable of defending the crash. Taking all the spare rifle batteries, as she stabilised her Co-pilot and the three crew chiefs, she stood her ground against the armed rebel mob that had taken over the planet, for several hours. Despite being wounded multiple times, through judicious use of improvised explosives, fire mission requests and good musketry, she kept the mob at bay. She was relieved by a contingent of Scots Guard, but she did not leave until her crew had been extracted and medevaced despite being scarce able to stand, let alone fight. All 5 survived, though two were invalided out with permanent spinal damage, and Laura and her co-pilot Stacey, were back flying within 6 weeks.

Personal history

Born in 2946 to the Earl of Teeside, Kerry Heywood-Floyd, and the Lady Teeside, Magdalena Heywood-Floyd, Laura was a precocious little girl with dreams of learning to fly helicopters. This dream started after her family were evacuated from their Newcastle Colony estate, when the moon it was located on suffered from a massive super volcanic eruption, aged just 5 years old. Her parents did not enjoy this fact, hoping she would stay at home and become the heir to the Teeside Estate, and so made it their duty to train her in the art of being a Lady. This did not happen as the rigidity of their thinking made her chafe. The life of the perfect boarding school lady did not fit with her general vibe.   In 2962, having escaped her parents clutches, she enrolled at the University of New Sheffield, studying Astrodynamics with Aerodynamics, supporting herself through University by tutoring fellow students in mathematics and formal etiquette, as well as ballroom dancing and appreciation of fine wines, whilst also learning to fly simple stick and rudder planes. She found the Astrodynamics parts of her degree interesting, but her love was still atmospheric flight, orbital dynamics and astronavigation being just too much maths for her to enjoy, despite being more than capable at them.   With her degree under her belt, the 22 year old Laura, found herself at a bit of a loose end, her parents' anger at her insubordination not yet subsided, she found herself drawn to the RAF. With the thrill of Rotary wing flight still in her heart she applied to join as a VTOL pilot. Accepted, she was trained how to fly a series of in-atmosphere heavy lift, and combat, VTOL craft, including the VC-58a6 Mustang Utility Helo, the VC-21a2 Clydesdale Heavy lift Helo and the VA-2 Destrier attack helicopter.    After one particularly rough day of flight training, in which one of the variable attitude scramjet engines on the C-45 Whirlpool fix wing transport she was flying broke free of its attitude gearing, leading it to spin uncontrollably around on its axle, at Mach 2.5, leading to a rapid and total destruction of the air frame. Both her and her instructor, Flight Lieutenant Dan Stoker, survived, the armoured cockpit holding together through transonic flight until they could eject. Finding themselves stranded on a tropical island for 3 months, the Laura that was rescued was heavily pregnant, leading to her active duty call sign of Hoover.   Giving birth to a daughter, Storm Magdalena Stoker-Heywood-Floyd, Laura reconnected with her parents during her time off work, and Storm lived with them for the first five years of her life, as Laura was busy flying helicopters as part of the counter attack on the Tarquin. Storm, known by her grandparents as Lil' Dalena, stayed with them until her mother was promoted to the QOARC. As part of 10th section's Logistics group, she moved to Earth to live there. Unfortunately, Dan, who had separated from Laura in 2968, but was still active in Storm's life, died when on active service, fighting the Tarquin in 2971, just a few months into Laura's QOARC service. However, whilst on Earth, in on of those few scant moments of leave, in 2973 she met her current wife, Isla Heywood-Floyd.   At no point before meeting the 35 year old Glaswegian MP's assistant, Isla Dawson, did Laura think that she was attracted to women. But it was almost literally love at first sight, as Laura spied the wiry older woman fight with her own toddler in a cafe, in Soho, her long red hair flowing with suppressed anger that made Laura tingle. In a moment of sheer bravery, Laura asked her if she would like to join herself and Storm at lunch, which Isla accepted, introducing her Son as Rhett, after her father.    They hit it off instantly, getting together officially not long after, when Storm asked if second mummy and her new brother were staying forever. Laura proposed to Isla in 2974, on a beach in the Caribbean, whilst recovering from her injuries sustained in the incident that awarded her a CGM. The event was highly amusing as Isla had had the same idea, and tried to propose at the same moment. Because of the Earldom, it was decided that Isla would take Laura's surname, but Rhett kept his mother's maiden name of Dawson.    Laura's income, on top of her stipend from her parents, was more than enough for Isla to stop working and she decided to run the Earth based day centre, with help from Jessica Ironsides for the children of QOARC officers and enlisted personnel, a role she has continued as part of the Solent Corps spouses.   Laura herself was promoted to Squadron Leader in the formation of the Corps, becoming the senior Forward Air Controller for the Rifles Regiment.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

She loves flying helicopters at nape of the Earth altitude through canyons, and she has a desire to teach her 2 children how to fly so she has to keep living, keep fighting.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Great at stick and rudder flying though pretty crap fighter pilot. Prefers cyclic and collective. Surprisingly Good FAC and shooter. Great singer and pianist, pretty good at the Waltz.    Shockingly awful at driving, a fact that makes Isla laugh and cringe all at once, with Laura saying 'At work I get driven in a tank, and at Home a limo, why do I need to drive.'

Likes & Dislikes

Loves flying helicopters and subsonic VTOL cargo planes. Likes classical piano music such as Elton John and Brahms. She enjoys singing, always up for singing at regimental events, she also loves ballroom dancing, having been brought up in that world, though she hates doing dances such as the Tango.

Vices & Personality flaws

Can be a little bit too prim and proper, doling out judgement a bit too quickly sometimes towards people doing odd things, despite her own personal history.
