2. On the Case
General Summary
At Garrigill Gate, Jenny began to discuss the events of the previous evening in The Cornerstone but Sam warned against this. The party headed back to the inn to talk, ordering bread for breakfast from the Gnomish barkeep at the otherwise empty bar.
Leopold expressed interest in further understanding the coincidental events the group had been entangled with. Despite working within the city for 30 years, Leopold admitted a lack of knowledge of The Veiled Custodians and thought it odd to have seen so much of them lately. The group expressed concern about the abilities of the Custodians. Jenny asked Leopold if he had ever heard anyone else talk about what is beyond The Wall - the reply being "of course not".
New boss goes by "The Sovereign".
Ignore orders from others. Iris' note about The Sovereign prompted the group to investigate the mysterious individual further, with a plan to visit The Crosscut - a hot spot for information brokering in The Gulch. Before leaving the Cornerstone, Lyra told the fortunes of Jenny and Lacey. Beginning with Lacey, the sorceress struggled with the task as "something does not want this" - later revealling that whatever this force is appeared to be protecting the young cleric. Lyra suggested this may be Lacey's faith. Jenny shared that he has been looking for something for "all of his life and memory". Upon searching for this, the woman refused to continue, stating that she cannot see beyond The Veil and encouraging Jenny to abandon this search. Sam showed a curiosity in Lyra's magic, confident this was not merely a trick. Meanwhile at The Church of the Dawn, Leopold organised his sabbatical with the Cardinal, ordering Priest Hawkmoor to hold any mail. Rejoining the group, Leopold appeared as an older version of the casual man the party had seen before. They then investigated the alleyway where Iris first discovered the note (and the criminals holding it). Captain Ida interrupted their investigation, with Lacey informing her "we are on the case" and Jenny asked after the men that assaulted Iris. Captain Ida told the group the men had committed countless crimes and that they had subsequently been dealt with. Arriving at the Crosscut, the party split into two groups with Iris, Jenny and Lacey trying to sell Iris' haul and then ask for some higher paying work. They found a Dwarven woman to sell to who - in exchange for all of Iris’ monster parts - told the team to look for The Dredgers who are thought to have had contact with the Sovereign. She informed the three that the Dredgers go deep into the Gulch and suggested they wait for them to come back up. Leopold and Sam found a local tavern and Leopold suggested that they should remain as inconspicuous as possible in the hopes of finding out about the Sovereign by eavesdropping on conversations. Just before entering the bar, Leopold changed his face once again, similar but hardened. In a distinctly unfamiliar accent, Leopold spoke to Jermome, the Half-Orc barkeep with it becoming clear that they were old friends. Jerome confirmed that no one has really seen the Sovereign, but agreed to let Leopold know any information he comes by. After this exchange Leopold told Sam he can be whatever he wants to be, offering the boy the ‘gift’ of honesty which he said he hadn’t offered anyone before. The two agreed to exchange honest questions/answers but Sam wished to save his question for another time. Leopold chose to ask Sam how it feels when his arcane power flows through him. Sam answered that it feels like freedom, and being home, that he likes being free, away from Kinstead, and that he wants to know what home really means for him. Following their exchange, Leopold asked Sam if he knew anything about the Hörst family, and mentions his brother. Sam told him he hasn’t heard of this family. A hunched Half-Elven man beckoned Iris, Jenny and Lacey over, seeking a rare filament that he said can be found in a creature called a Cave Fisher as a point of urgency. The man informed the trio that he knew where the Sovereign is, and Iris agreed to get him the filament. Before leaving, Iris asked the man where he is from "originally" which went down poorly and Lacey tried to understand the social rules around tattoos. She also asked Iris if she can ask her a question later. Regrouping, the party decided to take the man's quest, and began descending into the dark tunnels of the Gulch. Soon the group stumbled upon the unconscious and twitching body of a small, humanoid reptile.
