Arcanix

Where Magic is Might

Located on the South-Eastern shore of Lake Galifar, Arcanix, established by King Galifar I in the year 15 YK, is the umbrella name for the Arcane Congress and the three main branches of the congress. The purpose of Arcanix was originally to study the mysteries of magic and to place these powers at the service of the kingdom when requested or needed. While there is no one direct head of Arcanix, the congress that makes it up have had no trouble leading itself into the present day.   The three public branches of Arcanix that make up The Arcane Congress are as follows: The physical makeup of Arcanix consists of 4 main floating towers and the farmlands below and surrounding which provide the towers with the food and supplies necessary to the faculty, staff, & students. Two of the towers, Glarehold and Amberwall, are devoted to the future magewrites & wizards of Khorvaire and as such home to The School of Nine. While the other two towers, Nocturnas and Skyreach, are devoted to the libraries, laboratories, and residential areas of The Arcane Congress, and thus is home to The Cosmic Library. The towers themselves have been warped by the years and years of magical study, research, experimentation, and artifact storage and thus include the following arcane properties:
  • Extradimensional Space: while the towers are not the most grand example of architecture from the exterior, the interior is a different story with expansive halls and classrooms in The School of Nine and massive libraries and fully stocked laboratories and enough beds to rest an army in The Cosmic Library; while many students have tried to map the halls of the towers, their ever expanding and changing nature proves this almost impossible as adjustments are made for the needs of the congress.
  • Divinatory Protection: due to the expansive use of magic being used in Arcanix, someone trying to divine for anything inside the towers experiences more difficulty than most targets (raise DC by 5; think radio static)
  • Magical Potency: while some think it is due to the years and years of magical study and some think it is because of a strange arcane aura, the true case of this is unknown; all spells cast within the towers act as if they are cast at one level higher than actually cast, capping at 9th level; all spells cast act as if they are affected by the extend spell metamagic, causing their duration to be doubled, capping at 24 hours.
Along with the floating towers, two other features stick out to make Arcanix what it is in the minds of outsiders: the grand marble archway that sits just outside the courtyard and the courtyard itself which contains transport methods to reach each of the towers themselves.   The town itself, also names Arcanix, survives because of the college itself. The innkeeper stays in business because of the families of students, the stables stay in business by housing the animals, both exotic and not, of the students and staff, the farms stay in business because they supply the needs of the college.
