Nylanor

Nylanor is the sprawling capital city of Faryon, and the seat of power of King Ludwig the Third.   While predominantly populated by humans, who make up the slight majority of people in the city, Nylanor finds its origins as an Elven harbor, and while the records of how it came to fall into different hands have seemingly been lost to time, it is evident in the architecture of some of the oldest remaining buildings, still, as well as in the ancient sewage system.

City Districts

The city is made up of various 'districts', although many of these do not have any strictly defined borders, the districts instead overlapping at their borders.
  • The Palace is considered an individual district, and has its own, designated guard force.
  • The Noble's District is where a host of Faryon's nobility keeps homes - either for when they are visiting the capital, or as permanent residence. It is located closest to the palace of all districts in the city, and actually separated with a (small) wall, each of the streets leading into it guarded with its own gatehouse.
  • Yellowbrick Court is a sizable district filled with housing for the wealthier and more upper-class residents of Nylanor, merchants, magistrates, and nobility alike.
  • The Academic District is where almost all of Nylanor's educational institutions are located, be they mundane or magical in nature. It is also home to various bookstores, alchemical stores, and other assorted, more peculiar shops.
  • The Market District
  • is the center of commerce in Nylanor, besides the docks - it is here that one can find a wide variety of shops, market stands, and other assorted vendors, as well as plenty a tavern. It is also the place of residence for many middle-class merchants.
  • The Temple District
  • is the religious center of Nylanor, host to a variety of temples and churches dedicated to different deities. It also houses middle-class housing, however, and most of the buildings in the district are residential.
  • The Artisan's Rest district has historically been the birthplace of various artists and artisans, a residential area for middle-class citizens. Of interest are mostly the workshops of various sculptors who have kept their homes and workplaces here, rather than in the bustling Market District or the more refined, upper-class residences.
  • The docks of Nylanor are massive, host to countless of warehouses and offices. The Adyrian Trading Company has its largest offices in Faryon, here.
  • The Copperpin District is a residential district for the less fortunate, poorer inhabitants of Nylanor. Despite its poorer nature, law and order are maintained relatively well, with regular guard patrols on duty to keep the peace.
  • Featherwort is a sprawling shanty-town, built around Nylanor's walls. Guard patrols are few, here, lending to its ill reputation as a breeding ground for criminals and illegal activities.

Demographics

Nylanor's significant population is composed of a wide assortment of people and races hailing from all over the world. The slight majority is made up of humans, who make up just over half of the population, followed by Dwarves and Elves, each amounting for roughly 15% of the city's inhabitants. Other than that, Halflings, Gnomes and Orcs are the most commonly seen people, although the occasional Genasi can also be found.   The king's administrators have included the Half-Orcs among the number of Orcs within the city's limits, and Half-Elves among the Elven peoples.

Defences

Garrisoned by an expansive city watch and surrounded by a thick, well-maintained stone wall, Nylanor's defences are strong. Three sturdy gates form the main entrances to the city, together with the city's docks - which are likely the most vulnerable point of entry the city has. The king's seat of power, the palace, is located on top of cliffs, and the road leading up to it is easily defended. A second wall guards it, together with a single gate.
