The Protector's Cleric

Religion of the Townsfolk

The Townsfolks follow a monotheistic religion which believes that The Protector is the one god, and he is in a constant battle against The Forces. It was Harald of The Protectors who first told people the truth about The Protector and was the reason they broke away from the barbaric Nomads.   As a result, religion is the backbone of society in The Towns. The Old Church, Stoneham Town was the first building to be constructed by the Townsfolk and the people of the church, known as Clerics, are the most respected people, higher even than the Men of Authority.

Position

The Protector's Cleric is the most important mortal member of the Religion of The Towns. He, for it, is a position only a man can hold, is addressed as "Chosen" because it is believed that the only way a person can rise to this position is to be chosen by The Protector himself. He reports only to The Protector and is the absolute word of truth.

Appointment

When The Protector's Cleric is appointed, they immediately write the name of the person they want to succeed them into a secret tome. They may change this name at any time. Upon their death, the tome is opened by at least three other Clerics in the Old Church and the name is read. The person named is then appointed as The Protector's Cleric.

Duties

The Protector's Cleric is responsible for all the Clerics across all of the Towns. They also act as judge and jury when there are missteps which can't be rectified by the Men of Authority for that particular town.   He also carries out the Protector's Blessing, and as a result, is responsible for the spiritual wellbeing of every person within The Towns. If he finds someone cannot be saved then it is within his rights to exile them from The Towns.

Cultural Significance

The Protector's Cleric is the most significant person among the Townsfolk. Decisions they make have repercussions that impact every person within The Towns. If they are sent a vision by The Protector, or impose an edict, that has long-lasting consequences for everyone.   Historical examples of this include the second phase of the building of The Old Church in Stoneham Town, which only occurred because The Protector's Cleric who had commissioned the first build died, and the next man to take that position was dissatisfied with the outcome. He demanded it be made bigger and more impressive in a way which would be worthy of The Protector and would honour him.
