Personal history
Luxifer "Lux" Vanitas was born to Duke Andre Clovis of House Vanitas and a commoner named Elaine Dorothea Simmons in the city of Falonde, Nyxvanus. She and her twin, Vania Rose Vanitas, were raised under strict tutelage in a noble house meant to be loyal to the Elysian Empire's occupation of their government and land.
Vania was regarded as a prodigy who poured herself over her studies and put 100% effort into anything she did. From an early age, she was their father's "favorite," and Vania's driving motivation was earning praise and acknowledgement from their cold and distant father.
Lux, on the other hand, took the position of the "problem child." At a young age, she realized that her father cared little for either of them, and no matter how much she acted out, she would never receive anything more than a cold glare or punishment. Even an accomplishment was rewarded with a "good enough for you, I suppose" reaction. Eventually, Lux stopped trying to impress him all together. She turned to rebelling for a sense of freedom.
Lux's opposing view of their father compared to Vania's would cause a rift between them for years afterwards. While Vania dreamed of becoming the captain of the City Watch and believed that their father was the best person to govern it, Lux had been observing how the City Watch and other Empire propaganda treated both the citizens of Nyxvanus and those of Fae origin. After meeting Charlotte, her concerns were confirmed as reality, and she became an outcast among the nobility for calling out the horrible treatment done by both the Empire and the nobility of Nyxvanus.
The final nail in the coffin was when Lux discovered the truth about their mother. Andre had always claimed she died of natural causes during childbirth. In actuality, Andre had killed Elaine after she gave birth to children that could become his heirs, and he disposed of her to make it look as if he had no part in her death.
Thinking Vania would believe anything their father said, Lux confronted him alone in a rage and challenged Andre to a duel to the death. Andre took one of Lux's eyes and disowned them, leaving them to flee Nyxvanus before Andre's men hunted them down to hide the truth of Elaine's murder.
Lux left without seeing Charlotte for fear she would be persecuted further or killed by association. Lux instead headed for the Feywild, where she had made friends with a Spring Fae named Sirena Marrow. This would eventually lead to their meeting with the Queen of Winter, AKA the ruler of the Winter Fae Court, and becoming their spy in order to gain intelligence on the Elysian Empire. Lux's main goal has become killing their father and working to free Nyxvanus of the Empire's occupation.

The two were best friends, with Luxifer being a sibling-figure to Charlotte, until they were forced to flee Nyxanus. Many believe she is dead. Charlotte felt a sense of betrayal and abandonment from Lux leaving her behind without saying a word--though Lux only did this so she wouldn't be caught up in their problems.
