Bill Fjord

Bill Fjord is an secondary character in both the Pokemon: Indigo Chronicles and the Pokemon: New Horizons. Bill is the guardian and foster father of Mige Fjord. He is a former Pokemon League Champion and the creator of the Pokemon Storage System (PSS) that is used in many nations worldwide. Considered by many to be one of the smartest people in the world, Bill is part engineer, part computer science expert, part Pokemon researcher, and part mad-scientist.

Character

Bill is a brilliant engineer and a skilled Pokemon trainer. He’s generally pretty laid back, with a talent for improvisation and quick-thinking. He is famous across the world not just for creating the Pokemon Storage System, but for winning the Pokemon League Indigo Conference during the very tumultuous and exciting 2000 season.   He is a caring and thoughtful person, always willing to take the extra step to help others even if it puts himself in danger. Even as a teenager he would do his best for those in need, sometimes even ignoring his Pokemon journey to do so. This same sense of compassion led to him taking in, raising, and eventually adopting Mige.   Bill cares deeply for him, and has seen Mige as his son for a very long time. The two are very close, and Bill has been one of the few people Mige has gone to for advice in the beginning. Bill has gone to great lengths to teach Mige what he needed to know, and tries to be a source of good advice and encouragement for him throughout his adventures.   A solitary lighthouse cottage overlooking Cape Cerulean serves as Bill’s home and personal laboratory, and was where much of the Pokemon Storage System was created, and where Mige grew up. Mige’s Kanto Pokemon were also sent to the cottage, where Bill looked after them when they weren’t with Mige.   Both his home and work spaces are often messy and cluttered with papers, tools, gears, and other technological odds and ends. His natural curious and inventive nature makes him prone to daydreaming and spacing out, his mind constantly problem solving and innovating, which had also led to a habit of thinking out loud or rambling. Another result of these tendencies is that Bill can be fairly absent-minded, forgetting to double-check simple things while performing experiments. This has led to some less than ideal situations—such as getting his DNA grafted with a Clefairy.   As a Pokemon trainer, Bill is renowned the world over. He’s a powerful battler and a brilliant strategist. While never the guy with the most powerful team on paper, he’s usually the smartest guy in the room and capable of thinking his way around almost any opponent. His tactics are often unorthodox, and he has a habit of ignoring type matchups—traits that Mige seems to have inherited.   Despite his fame and significant wealth, Bill is humble and does not brag about his accomplishments. He prefers a modest lifestyle and doesn’t like formal events, pawning off tickets he receives to banquets and fancy parties to…really anybody he can. Such events make him uncomfortable and he gets bored rather easily.   He has an extensive family, and he is close to them. He often makes trips between his home in northern Kanto to Fuchsia City to visit his grandfather and older sister, as well as trips out to Goldenrod City to visit his mother and brother. He is respectful of traditions (even if he often ignores them), and has been formally taught classical dancing and ballroom dancing by his mother (a former Kimono Girl). Bill has done his best to pass these skills on to Mige, as well.

Outfits

Bill’s normal outfit in Pokemon: The Indigo Chronicles was his favorite purple polo shirt with blue jeans and his old, weathered sneakers. For formal occasions, he wore a button-up shirt with a green tie and blue slacks.   When traveling or exploring, Bill wears a yellow and black hiking jacket and jeans, with sturdy but comfortable hiking boots. He has wool fingerless gloves that can turn into mittens.   During the Gym Leaders Conference in Undella Town, he wore a green Alolan Shirt and purple swimming shorts with sandals.   In Pokemon: New Horizons, his most common outfit was a dark blue sweater over a button-up shirt, with either jeans or slacks with his sneakers. This lasted until the end of Wish Upon a Star, when he started wearing a red flannel shirt with jeans. In Season 2 of New Horizons, Bill is seen with a navy zip-up hoodie over a band t-shirt, a Pokemon League Hat, jeans, and his hiking boots.   For formal events, he wears the formal outfit described above, though now it includes a blue-green suit jacket.

Pre-Series

Bill was born in Greenfield, Johto; a suburb of Goldenrod. After his father passed away, Bill’s subsequent behavioral issues necessitated his moving to Kanto to live with his grandfather, an esteemed Pokemon researcher. He left Fuchsia City as soon as he could to start a Trainer’s Journey, and was part of the very first Kanto Trainer Starter Program. He didn’t do so out of a love for Pokemon or some lofty goal or dream of becoming a Master; he mostly just did it so he could get out of the house and to have an excuse to skip school. However, over the course of his adventures, he made good friends, helped others, and grew to truly love Pokemon; he became fascinated with both the majesty and mystery of the enigmatic creatures.

After becoming the Champion of the 2000 Indigo Conference, Bill would work as an aide to Professor Oak for a time before moving to Sinnoh to work under Professor Rowan, along with fellow nerd and scientist Beatrice “Bebe” Penttilä, and traveled the world, researching and studying. His time in Sinnoh would eventually led to his creating the Pokemon Storage System—something that has drastically changed the way the world works. Afterward, Bill would devote most of his time to the Storage System, working on maintenance issues and finding ways to continue improving and expanding it.

In early 2008, Bill met Mige when the latter was just a young boy wandering through Cerulean Park alone and with no memories. Bill took the boy in and the pair bonded, with Mige eventually becoming Bill’s ward, apprentice, and ultimately, his adopted son. Bill raised Mige as best he could. He wasn’t perfect, but he was there for Mige, helped him to indulge in his interests, and tried to find ways to get Mige to come out of his shell a little and maybe even make new friends.

In 2018, while Mige was away as Science Camp, Bill was working on his prototype Teleportation Device when he was accidentally locked inside the chamber with his Clefairy. The machine turned on and the two fused into a single, horrifying thing. It’s likely he would have lost his mind as the unstable genetic structure rapidly broke down, but Bill was saved by the timely arrival and intervention of Ash Ketchum and his friends. Bill gave them tickets to the SS Anne as thanks—which he was actually quite happy to get rid of. Bill hates fancy-do’s.

Indigo Chronicles

In 2019, Bill took a 17 year-old Mige with him to Pallet Town to fix some issues with Professor Oak’s storage system. When Professor Oak received word of a potential new Pokemon sighting, Bill saw an opportunity for Mige to finally get out and find his own path; he wanted Mige to get out there and see the world—but he also knew that sometimes Mige needed a little nudge to get him going in the right direction. So, Bill encouraged the Professor to send Mige to investigate the sighting. That would be the beginning of Mige’s journey, and of the Pokemon: Indigo Chronicles campaign.

Bill remained in Cape Cerulean through much of the campaign’s events, where he could continue his normal routine of managing Fjord Industries and maintaining the Storage System (and secretly working on the teleporter machine, but don’t tell Mige). Bill would serve as a source of encouragement and information for Mige from time to time, and Mige would learn some of his most important lessons by talking and training with Bill.

He appeared in Pokemon: The Kami Saga, where he played a significant role as a source of information, and was one of the volunteers to venture into the storm to find Landorus’ Shrine to stop the storm. When the group was attacked by Thundurus, he and Lt. Surge stayed behind to keep Thundurus busy and slow it down, buying the rest of the group time to continue. Bill would be injured in the battle, but he and Surge both survived and were seen by the rest of the group after everything was over smoking cigars on top of a fallen tree.

Bill would also begin dating Erika Flowers during this campaign, and as of Christmas 2019, Bill made the paperwork official and adopted Mige. Bill was also present during Pokemon: Godfall, serving as the reason Mige and his friends traveled to Sinnoh to begin with. He would arrive to assist in the final battle against Sonny’s forces at Spear Pillar, saving Mige in the nick of time before absolutely wrecking a handful of goons, and defeating Jupiter in a battle.

Pokemon League: Victors

Bill appeared in every episode of the Pokemon: Indigo League Victors series as well. He mostly served as a source of encouragement, helping Mige practice, offering advice, and breaking down the strategies of other trainers while spectating. Bill could be seen in the audience for each of Mige’s battles, as well as those of Tim and Zoey. He was almost always seen with either Mige or Erika, or both.

New Horizons

Bill was notified by Lance that the Arotan Pokemon League was undergoing some drastic changes soon; two members of the Elite Four were retiring, the Champion was abdicating his position, a handful of Gyms in both Kanto and Johto were changing hands, and Professor Oak was talking about retiring. Of course, Bill was told that he was in consideration for any position he wanted; he could go for the Elite Four, a gym leader, or even the Kanto National Professor. He could probably even go for Master Champion once the position was vacant, as there was likely going to be a tournament for it.

The opportunity was an excellent one, but Bill was unsure whether he wanted either of those job or not. He was perfectly happy where he was, though he couldn’t deny the idea of becoming the Professor was appealing, if daunting.

For much of Season 1, Bill played a similar role to the one he played in Indigo Chronicles, serving as a source of encouragement and advice, albeit he made more appearances. However, as Mige became embroiled in the conflict with the Horizon Institute, Bill has instead devoted most of his time to finding ways to stop the Institute and help Mige, and to that end served as a founding member of the Atmosphere Initiative in the wake of Pokemon: Wish Upon a Star. He also spent several weeks in the Guandou wilderness for an undisclosed reason, which he is playing close to the chest—but insists that it could be key to stopping their seemingly monolithic enemy.
