History
The Pentaghast family originated in the small town of Hunter Fell, while it was still a member of the Free Marches. The family became royalty when they relocated to Nevarra City following their participation in the First Exalted March. At the time, Nevarra City was growing as one of the fastest cities in central Thedas. Caspar Pentaghast was able to find a seat in the city-state's senate. From there, he gained a lot of admiration amongst his peers and a lot of animosity from his rivals. Over time, he became the most notable senate member and acted as their figure-head. This position was passed down between family members.
What is likely about three centuries later, Nester Pentaghast was killed and Tylus Van Markham seized the senate position and thus began the Van Markham dynasty, forcing the Pentaghast family to flee to their ancestral home of Hunter Fell. Eventually, the last Van Markham senate leader died and left no heir. The Pentaghasts came from down under and were able to restore themselves as the senate leaders. The few who were still alive from the Van Markham family were absorbed into the Pentaghast family as a move to strengthen their overall claim to power. Together, they solidified Nevarra's status as a significant power in Thedas. The Pentaghasts maintained their rule for generations while their Van Markham relatives enjoyed an equally lofty status among the nobility.
Even more centuries later and after several Orlesian campaigns to take Nevarra from the Free Marches, the Pentaghasts had basically gained a level of fame amongst the commonfolk and thus were more commonly called princes and princesses rather than senate leaders. The Pentaghasts approached the Orlesian Empress Leandre Drakon I in an attempt to solidify a peace treaty through marriage. The empress set aside her husband of seventeen years to marry senate leader Sotan Pentaghast. They had a child, but after the child's birth it was found out that Sotan had indeed not impregnated Empress Drakon. There was no way it was his and Nevarrans responded to the Orlesians with vitriol.
The Pentaghasts watched as the Second Exalted March saw the Orlesians and the Dalish brutally massacre each other. During this time, the family feared their ability to grow as a nation state under the Free Marches. They petitioned the leaders of Kirkwall and Starkhaven to let them leave the coalition peacefully. They did so, which baffles most historians to this day.
When Orlesian and Nevarrans came together once again to try and find peace, it was well known that the belief in the Maker had become an integral part of almost all Nevarran's lives. The Divine decided the best way to create such an alliance of nations was to have the Divine be the new ruler of Nevarra instead of being a figurehead in Orlesian culture. The Pentaghasts stepped down from the senate leadership position but have still remained in the spotlight amongst other Nevarran, Free Marcher, and Orlesian nobles.
Throughout a long portion of this family's storied history, they've been also recognized as one of the first and only families to be willing to fight and kill dragons. Because they were so absolutely skilled at it, they brought the entire species to extinction.
