Personal history
Spoiler: Campaign 1
Zevran was born to a Dalish mother and a Drow father. Not long after his birth, his mother left him on the doorstep of a brothel in Rialto. Along with other orphans, Zevran was raised communally by the prostitutes. He had a patron, a modest woodcutter, who would regularly send small stipends to the brothel in his name. He imagines this man was his father, but he never met the man and had no way to learn who he was for none of the prostitutes knew.
Zevran's cunning, deceit, and skill in stealing had brought him the attention of a Guildmaster Talav of House Arainai. The Guildmaster gave Zevran the knowledge that his patron was deeply indebted and offered the young seven year-old the ability to be bought with the stipulation that all of the debts of his patron would go away. Imagining it was his father, Zevran agreed. As such, he was considered compradi (purchased).
Little did he know, Zevran sold himself into the Antivan Crows. Out of the eighteen recruits bought that year, he and a close friend of his were the only ones to survive. Slowly, he became a very skilled assassin.
Many years later, the Crows contracted him out to a high-paying individual in Ferelden. The purpose of his hiring was to send him to the lands far to the South and have him manipulate the strings of the war behind the scenes, on behalf of the Alamarri Sons. His plans eventually failed, but he was able to persuade the Wardens that he was less of a threat and that instead he could be used to help them. Now, he hides in the shadows, fearful of when and where the Crows will come to kill him for failing.
For a time, he aided them until the Warden-Commander Flume no longer wished to see after him and granted him leave from the country and his servitude to the Wardens. Zevran, not particularly attached to anyone, stuck around for a short time until wanting to travel more. Eventually, Antivan Crows came to finish him off for his failures during the war. He supposedly managed to live, and decided he would no longer run. Supposedly, he took the fight to the Crow's doorsteps. Since, four master assassins of the Crows have disappeared and, if rumors are to be believed, the Crows have completely given up on going after him.
Morality & Philosophy
Zevran is easygoing by nature. Since he is a crow, he's skilled in taking people's suspicions of himself and deflecting such accusations with wit. He has no reservations about what he does for a living, nor does he try to dress up his role as a Crow. He acknowledges freely that he is a killer and that he cannot picture himself doing anything else. Even so, he does possess a somewhat slanted sense of morality that guides his actions.
Though most would not expect a killer to praise the Maker, Zevran does. He has a unique relationship with religion, however. Instead of living by Chantry rules and hoping to live life piously, he instead does everything he does and asks forgiveness from the Maker afterwards, even though he knew it was wrong originally. He thinks its far better to live a more interesting life than to ruin all of life's great opportunities.
