Koricshold

Koricshold is the political and cultural center of the Benkory Clan of Colo and the seat of power for the Ryuri Benkory, Connar Benkory.   Koricshold has a population of more than 18,000 people, and 90% of those are Humans. There is a single community of 1,600 Gnomes living in Koricshold under the direct protection of the Ryuri.   Koricshold is a busy port city, located in a sheltered cove surrounded by high stony bluffs. There is a strand of nearly a mile of flat sand and gravel, with an aproach from both the north and the south. These roads are guarded by large fortified gates built into the earthen walls the surround the cove. Most of these walls were constructed many hundreds of years ago, and have been repaired and rebuilt many times in the preceding centuries. Deep v-shaped ditches front each of the rampart walls a facing height of more than 35' and a depth of more than 30'. Each rampart has had a stone wall built onto the top of the rampart, adding to both the height and imposing look of the defenses.

Demographics

Mostly Human, with a protected community of 1,600 Gnomes living within the city.

Defences

From the land there are only two approach roads, north and south.  Each road is guarded by massive stone fortresses and the surrounding bluffs are faced with deep earthen ditches and banks topped with stone walls and towers.  The strand is protected by the (literally) dozens of longships always within the harbor, and all full of seasoned would-be pirates and brigands.

Industry & Trade

Fishing, whaling, shipping and ship building are all popular and profitable industries within the city, but the most profitable by far is the slave trade. There are two large slave markets within the city, and another located just to the west of the city on the main road into the interior.

Infrastructure

Much of the city's perimeter defenses were originally laid down nearly one thousand years ago as massive ditch and bank ramparts.  Roads within this perimeter have been so trodden for so long that they are all now sunken several feet lower than the surrounding ground level.  Closer to the water's edge, pavements are rougher and less finished but more durably constructed.  Significant infrastructure includes a large and well-built aquaduct that brings fresh water to the portions of the city closest to the seashore and well designed wharfs and quays jutting into the sea to provide for the loading and unloading of the hundreds of ships that pass through the harbor every season.

Districts

Old Stone Market is the largest market square in the city, and it holds the largest slave auction in the city thirteen times a year.  Watersmeet is the waterfront and warehouse district of Koricshold.  The Greenway is the road and neighborhood on the western-most edge of the city where the wealthiest members of society live, work and play.

Guilds and Factions

The majority of civic and community leadership rests with the Benkory Clan members, but a growing number of wealthy members of the Dalcass family are beginning to make themselves known within Koricshold.  This growing Dalcass influence has generated some real tension amongst the tradesmen and elite of the city.

Climate

Typical northern coastal climate with strong offshore winds, heavy rains in the spring and early winter, thick fog in the fall and late winter.  Bitter cold in the deepest winter, but moderate snowfall due to the ocean.

Natural Resources

Abundant seafood harvests, including cod, shell fish, whales, sardines and herring.  Waterfowl, seals, otter and sharks also contribute to the sea's bounty.  Inland harvests provide hardwood timber, sheep and goat herds, and an annual mastadon migration that provides meat, hides and tusks every spring and fall.
