Srenn

Srenn is one of the four main cities in Ritherenia. The city of Srenn is well known for it's nutritious soil, and many big farms. The city is run by a family with great influence who has shared it's responsibilities between all the five noble families. There are also minor noble families in Srenn. All the nobles live inside the city walls, while the peasants are scattered outside the walls. Srenn is also widely believed to be one of, if not, the first settlement in Ritherenia.
We bring the food to Ritherenia, without food there is no Ritherenia.
— Fredericus Vemoux

Demography

As Ritherenia's size has been reduced, the city of Srenn has only expanded it's boarders. This would normally led to a more diverse population, but in this case it hasn't. Srenn has instead attracted humans from other cities in Ritherenia. The city consists of about 70% humans, 14% elves, 11% dwarves and 5% halflings. The inhabitants of Srenn may even be wary of other races because they are very rarely visiting the city. The natives belong to the Northern ethnicity which is characterized by fair skin, light hair and light eyes.

Geography

Ritherenia lies in Thymerias northern hemisphere. This means the climate contains both hot and cold weather, although rarely any extreme weather which can be found in other parts of Thymeria. The average temperature is -5 degrees Celsius in the winter, and 15 degrees Celsius in the summer. Srenn is located in the southern region of Ritherenia, where the average temperature is generally a little higher. South of Srenn is the ocean, where the city gets some of it's food.

Culture

The inhabitants of Srenn are usually seen as a remotely open minded people in terms of sexuality, diverse cultures and other matters of identity. They are, however, known for their coldness towards unknown races. The people of Srenn has never been quite interested in the politics outside the city gates. This might explain the peasants recently siding with the rebellion.   All the noble females in Srenn are taught to use the bow. They are usually around 10 years old when the training starts. This skill is often used during hunting trips or as a party entertainment. The noble males are usually taught the classical sword dueling, which is used the same way as the bow. The familys influence and money are often reflected in their childrens bow or sword skills (as they can afford better instructors).   The city of Srenn is well known for it's two big festivals named The Seed Sowing Festival and The Harvest Festival. Early in the spring The Seed Sowing Festival brings all the farmers inside the city walls, here they can compete with each other to win bags of quality seeds. The festival is mostly entertaining for the nobles, and as the festivities progresses they also take part. Differents stalls with small mini games and the like decorate the Srenn Market. When the festival concludes there is a parade where the people wear colourful clothes and join in on different eating competitions. The Harvest Festival is celebrated roughly the same way, except they don't give out seeds as rewards and they instead has a competition where the farmers can display their biggest and most delicious crops. Both festivals lasts about a week, and the farmers are compelled to either sow most of their seeds or harvest the majority of their crops during this week.

Religion

The Church of Srenn has a very respectable position in the city. Their High Priest is often a second born noble male. He is usually taught at a young age before he goes into an apprenticeship under the current High Priest. The noble man is slowly given more and more responsibility until the High Priest dies, and he takes over the position. The current High Priest is Didien Chanamoux, who has not yet taken an apprentice. He is expected to choose a noble boy when he is comfortable with his position as the High Priest, and when he finds a worthy apprentice.   The people of Srenn are devoted to the Goddesses Desna, Shelyn and Sarenrae. They honour the Goddesses with small celebrations, art and whole buildings. The Church of Srenn suggests that home and everyday worshipping is just as important as the big celebrations. The High Priest Didien is well known for his view on devotion, and the fact that everyone can and should worship the Goddesses in their own home. He is not opposed to visiting the church regularly, but has said that the poor people who is busy working should do what they can at home.
The Goddesses does not care that you are a farmer, a blacksmith or a king. They care about your devotion, and that is what you all should hold true to your hearts.
— High Priest Didien Chanamoux

Politics

The city is filled with farmers who work and live outside the city walls. Inside the city walls are all the nobles who both run and work for the citys prosperity. Srenn is one of four cities in Ritherenia, and are therefore under the Ritherenian king's influence. The king has blessed the five noble houses of Srenn, and they are therefore supposed to enact on the king's behalf. The noble houses has divided the different responsibilities between them for generations. The house leaders are welcome to visit the king, but they rarely do. The king of Ritherenia has never been known to visit Srenn, and todays king is not any different. They do, however, send letters and messages to each other whenever the noble houses of Srenn are in need of advice.

The Noble Houses of Srenn

The firstborn son is usually the one to inherit the family estate and the role as House Ruler. Other children are often placed in high positions, married into other houses or given a shop or land that they can control. The five Noble Houses of Srenn are as follows; House Vemoux who is in control of the other houses and most of the farmland outside the gates, House Chanamoux who is in control of the Lanoux Harbour and a handful of clothing shops and appartments, House Croigner who is in control of the prison, courthouse and city guard, House Befort who is in control of the stables, taverns and inns, and House Montenac who control the food, drink and restaurants.   The five Noble Houses of Srenn are usually friendly, but small squabbles are not a rarity. As politics go they both argue and collaborate with each other. House Vemoux has always had the upper hand, which means that the other families has never tried to take over that house. It's mostly peaceful, and a reason for that can be the constant marrying between the families.

History

The history of Srenn is believed to go back to when Ritherenia was first discovered. Derinuria, in the south, sent out ships with warriors and researchers to discover new land and to find out what happened to The Ancients of Thymeria. They collected alot of history and concluded a ton of experiments, though they could never figure out exactly what happened with The Ancinents. Instead they discovered many continents around the world, and is today considered great explorers and researchers.   In the beginning Srenn had only one noble House, named the House of Vemoux. This house was also the source of the old name Vemouxien. The House of Vemoux was later divived into three houses: House Vemoux, House Chanamoux and House Lanoux. The three houses married into each other over the generations, until alot of their descendants became infertile. The King of Ritherenia decided that he would send three noble families to Srenn, in the hopes that they could provide new genes and give him better influence over the city. Today there are five noble houses in Srenn; House Vemoux, House Chanamoux, House Berfort, House Croigner and House Montenac. They have shared the different responsibilities between them (see politics section), and do collaborate frequently.   Ritherenia is known for it's bloody wars, and Srenn is no exception. The different houses hasn't been in open war with each other, but they have had many squabbles. Ritherenia had a larger area before the wars, but the fighting with Thaylen has made it smaller. The southern parts of Ritherenia is a war wasteland where bandits thrive. These bandits have been prone to attack cities like Srenn, among others. In 1259 ME the city of Srenn fell victim to a huge bandit attack. The bandits almost breached the city gates, but the city guards held them back until the kings reinforcements arrived. Srenn suffered heavy losses of both guards and civilians. This attack led to poverty, turmoil between the noble families, destroyed crops, death of a few important nobles and the disapperance of Ellaine Anavi Chanamoux. The aftermath of this attack has led the people of Srenn to lose faith in King Eydor and his ability to rule Ritherenia. Therefore they started to help the rebellion, which led the king to attack them in year 1264 ME. This attack was not an attempt to seize the city, but to scare people from joining and supporting the rebellion. The kings men burned down the houses outside the gates, which they fought to protect five years earlier.
