Crimson Hollow

Crimson Hollow, called Ellaeyáná Edián by the High Elves and Drow, is the desert moon of ti'Rae. It is also the planet's only original moon.

Geography

The entire moon is covered in dry, red sand. There is no surface water, only large aquifers scattered deep beneath the surface. The equator is marked by a trench of varying depths; at its shallowest, it is 250 ft, and at its deepest it is 3.1 miles.

Climate

The climate of Crimson Hollow is incredibly varied; days are incredibly dry and nights are incredibly humid, as well as fluctuating humidity in the atmosphere at all times. However, the weather is almost never clear; the equator is plagued with high winds of up to 500 mph, leading to devestating frequent sand storms. Winds tend to taper off further from the equator, becoming essentially non-existent at the poles. The temperature varies incredibly depending on the day/night cycle of the side of the moon one is on. During the day, the average temperature is 75°C (167°F). However, during the night, average temperatures drop dangerously to around -65°C (-85°F). Temperatures only reach bearability during dawn and dusk, around 21°C (70°F).

History

Early History

Crimson Hollow was once covered in a lucious, mountainous jungle. At a time that predates the arrival of ti'Rae's second moon, a groundquake so powerful and devestating affected the entire moon, causing it to collapse in on itself. Barely any life survived and was able to adapt in the new environment. The dirt lost fertility and turned to sand; the moon's magnetic field was disrupted, shocking the weather into a permenant state of high winds.

The Time of the Elves

Crimson Hollow, before being settled by Humans, was called Ellaeyáná Edián (lit. "desert moon") by the High Elves--and later the Drow--for its striking russet color. Very little was known about Crimson Hollow. Astronomers who observed from afar noted its harsh climate and immediately deemed it uninhabitable and, therefore, unimportant. It wasn't given any thought until Drow, who had returned to ti'Rae from the Argent Moon after the failed settlement expedition, were forced off the planet and, with no hope and nowhere to go, fled to Crimson Hollow.
