King of Noordcross
The title King of Noordcross is a relatively new monarchical title in the historical and political landscape of the Theron. The title was created and first assumed by Rylar, a noble of House Rygard, in the year 326 RE (Republic Era). The title represents the sovereignty and rulership over the region of Noordcross, which is located in the northeastern part of the Theron.
Appointment
Though a newly established title, the King of Noordcross has become an integral part of Noordcross's identity and political structure. The title’s succession is hereditary, passing to the eldest heir of the ruling house.
Responsibilities
As King of Noordcross, Rylar holds absolute authority over the region. His responsibilities include safeguarding the security, prosperity, and welfare of the people of Noordcross. The title also signifies the holder’s role in maintaining and overseeing the region's strategic trade routes and natural resources.
The King of Noordcross also engages in diplomatic affairs and forms alliances, as exemplified by Rylar’s arrangement with the Karidan people to the north, which involves granting them passage through his lands in exchange for protection against threats from the eastern mountains.
History
Historical Context
Prior to the creation of the title, Rylar was the Lord of Noordcross, a rank equivalent to a duke, and was a vassal to the King of Theron. Noordcross had been governed by House Rygard for generations, with the house having a deep-rooted historical claim to the region. In 325 RE, the Kingdom of Theron faced a major political crisis following the death of King Brennus. The political vacuum, coupled with popular uprisings that are believed to have been instigated by the Namorian Republic, led to widespread unrest across the kingdom. The turmoil even resulted in the formation of the Black Coast Free States in West Theron. In Noordcross, Lord Rylar faced similar challenges with revolts and uprisings. However, with skilled leadership and tactful decisions, he was successful in suppressing the revolts and maintaining order in his domain.Proclamation as King
In early 326 RE, Balinor, another prominent figure, proclaimed himself King of the Mountain, reviving an ancient title. Inspired by Balinor and as a response to the chaotic state of Theronite politics, Rylar decided to assert his sovereignty over Noordcross. Using his historical claim to the area and capitalizing on his successful suppression of the revolts, he proclaimed himself the King of Noordcross later that year. While the title was new and had no precedent, it was well-received by the Fjordlanders, who viewed Rylar’s leadership as instrumental in preserving the stability and security of their homeland during turbulent times. Moreover, this elevation to kingship reflected the political realities of a fragmented Theron, with regional powers becoming more autonomous.Cultural Significance
King Rylar’s creation of the title also had a domino effect, as it inspired other regional leaders, such as Kurgan of the Great Plains, to assert their sovereignty by adopting kingly titles. Thus, the title of King of Noordcross has had a significant impact on the political restructuring of Theron in the post-Brennus era.
