Kingdom of Noordcross

The Kingdom of Noordcross is a geopolitical entity located in the north-eastern region of the continent of Orynthia. It is bordered by the Kingdom of Karida to the north, Eldorath to the south, the Thrymbarth Mountains to the east, and the Black Coast and West Theron to the west. Established as a kingdom by Rylar in 326 RE, Noordcross is strategically positioned along trade routes and holds significant geopolitical importance due to its location. The Kingdom of Noordcross is known for its fjords, maritime climate, and the resilient Fjordlander people who constitute the majority of its population.

Structure

  • Monarchy - Noordcross is an absolute monarchy, with the King as the supreme ruler. The current ruler, King Rylar, holds executive, legislative, and judicial authority. The title of the King of Noordcross is relatively new, established by Rylar himself in 326 RE.
  • Council of Chieftains - Similar to the Council of Elders in Tarnvik, the Kingdom has a Council of Chieftains, representing different regions and clans. The Council provides advice and counsel to the King on various matters.
  • Nobility - A class of nobles exists within Noordcross, many of whom manage fiefs and large estates. They hold a degree of autonomy in their governance but owe allegiance to the King.
  • Military - Noordcross maintains a standing army, along with a naval force. The King is the commander-in-chief, with several high-ranking generals and admirals reporting directly to him.

Culture

The culture of Noordcross is deeply rooted in Fjordlander traditions. The Fjordlanders are renowned for their connection to the sea and the land, and their customs often revolve around fishing, hunting, and honoring the natural world. There is also an emphasis on storytelling and oral traditions, with sagas and tales passed down through generations.
  • Hospitality - The people of Noordcross value hospitality and often welcome travelers with open arms. There is a tradition of feasting and sharing stories with guests.
  • Festivals - Various festivals are celebrated throughout the year, often coinciding with fishing seasons, the migration of caribou, or astronomical events. These festivals include traditional music, dances, and feasting.

Military

The military of the Kingdom of Noordcross is structured to deal with a range of threats, from suppressing internal uprisings to defending against external aggressions. Here are the primary components:
  • The King's Guard - armoured
  • The Fjord Wardens - travellers
  • The Riverwatch - Operating along the rivers and fjords, the Riverwatch is a naval militia tasked with safeguarding the waterways of Noordcross. They monitor for smugglers and pirates, especially from the Black Coast, and ensure safe passage for traders and fishermen. Their longboats are swift and agile, capable of navigating the narrow fjords effectively.
  • Order of the Sacred ShieldOrder of the Sacred ShieldKaridan Knightstravellersdefence
  • The Levy - In times of emergency, Noordcross can call upon its citizens to take up arms as part of a levy system. These levies are temporary forces, often composed of hunters, fishermen, and farmers. They provide additional manpower and local knowledge during crises.
Together, these forces work to ensure the security and sovereignty of the Kingdom of Noordcross. King Rylar's military policies are geared towards maintaining stability and protection against both internal and external threats.

Religion

Noordcross is home to a blend of religious beliefs. The indigenous Fjordlander faith is animistic and rooted in nature worship. They believe in spirits residing in the natural world, and traditional rituals are performed to honor these spirits.   In addition to the native beliefs, the Order of Haldra, a monotheistic religion from Karida, has a significant presence in Noordcross. Many Noordcrossers have adopted the worship of Haldra, the goddess of light, trust, and justice. There are several temples dedicated to Haldra, and her followers often work closely with the local population on issues of justice and community welfare.   Furthermore, a small number of settlers from other parts of the world have brought diverse religious practices, and the Kingdom of Noordcross is generally tolerant and accepting of different faiths.   The Kingdom of Noordcross, with its rich cultural tapestry and strategic importance, is a vibrant and essential part of the larger Orynthian continent. Its people, geography, and traditions make it a unique and intriguing realm within the world of Theron.
