King of the Mountain

The title King of the Mountain is a hereditary monarchy designation within the Kingdom of the Mountain, located in the Eldorath region in eastern Theron. The title is associated with the rulers who have dominion over the mountainous terrain and surrounding areas of Eldorath, ruling from the city of Aquila. The region contains Ironpeak Mountain. The bearer of this title is also known to wear the symbolic Iron Crown, which is believed to be an emblem of the kingdom's ancient power and connection to the mountains.

Appointment

The title of King of the Mountain is hereditary, typically passing from the reigning king to the eldest offspring. In cases where the King has no direct heir, the Council of Elders, comprised of the heads of the noble houses and senior druids, is tasked with selecting a new king from amongst the noble families.

Responsibilities

The King of the Mountain holds significant authority over the region, functioning as both the political and spiritual leader. The King is responsible for maintaining the sovereignty and security of the Kingdom, overseeing economic affairs, and ensuring the welfare of its inhabitants. Additionally, the King holds a special role in the druidic traditions and is often involved in various rituals and ceremonies that are central to the Eldarothi culture. This includes the guardianship of the southern limits of the caribou migration and the stewardship over the natural resources of the region.

History

The title is believed to have originated around 200 BRE, with King Tharald being recognized as the first King of the Mountain. The early rulers, whose power was largely grounded in their connection to the mountains and their resources, played a significant role in uniting various mountain clans and tribes. In 25 BRE, with the formation of the Kingdom of Theron of Theron, the title was integrated into the larger kingdom, and the independent status of the Kingdom of the Mountain was dissolved. For several centuries, the title was not in active use, and Eldorath became part of the Kingdom of Theron. However, in 325 RE, with the collapse of the Kingdom of Theron upon the death of King Brennus, Balinor, a descendant of the ancient Kings of the Mountain, reclaimed and reestablished the title. He named himself King of the Mountain and has since worked to revive the traditions and stature associated with this ancient title.

Cultural Significance

The King dons the Iron Crown, which is symbolic of the might of the mountains and the ancient legacy of the Kingdom. The crown is said to have been forged from the iron mined from Ironpeak Mountain and is believed to contain mystical properties. The King's banner, often depicting a mountain peak or a bird of prey, is also an important symbol representing the dominion over the highlands.
