Legend of Farsqueak

Farsqueak is a legendary rat from the city of Namor, celebrated for its remarkable journey across the Great Ocean back to Namor City. The tale of Farsqueak has had a significant influence on the local culture and folklore, popularized in the form of a children's lullaby, and is often seen as a symbol of the city's primacy and exceptionalism.

Summary

In the annals of lore, Farsqueak stands legendary, a rat nurtured by a distinguished Rat Handler in the heart of Namor City. In a twist of fate, a greenhorn rat handler bought Farsqueak, intent on training him anew after whisking him across the expansive Great Ocean to the foreign shores of Orynthia. Undeterred, Farsqueak managed to slip the clutches of captivity, and against all conceivable odds, charted a course back home. This astonishing testament of perseverance and instinctual prowess has come to symbolize both the tenacious spirit of Namor and the unwavering loyalty of its citizens.

Historical Basis

The story of Farsqueak was first recorded by a scholar named Voss. After hearing rumours of a rat that had traversed the ocean, Voss was intrigued and began a painstaking investigation. He journeyed from Namor to Cademor, tracing the supposed path of the legendary rat. Despite facing scepticism from his peers and the challenges of piecing together sailors' tales, Voss collected a vast array of accounts testifying to Farsqueak's journey.

Spread

Voss's work attracted attention from various corners of the city, ultimately inspiring a local bard to pen the now-famous children's lullaby about Farsqueak's journey Farsqueak's Tale. The song, along with Voss's findings, helped popularize the tale across the city and beyond. However, due to its widespread nature, several apocryphal tales also emerged. These included accounts of Farsqueak's supposed adventures in Orynthia, and claims that the rat possessed supernatural abilities that enabled his journey.

Variations & Mutation

Several variations of the Farsqueak tale exist, with each adding its own unique flavour to the story. One popular variation claims Farsqueak was not just any rat, but the pet of a wealthy merchant's daughter who was heartbroken when he was lost. In another version, Farsqueak is believed to have stowed away on a pirate ship, living on stolen crumbs until he made his way back to Namor.

Cultural Reception

Farsqueak's tale, despite its humble origins, has had a profound impact on Namor's cultural landscape. It has become an important part of the city's collective identity and folklore. The story is told to children as a lullaby and adults alike as a reminder of the city's significance. The legend of Farsqueak has transcended its origins to become an essential part of the city's cultural fabric, representing resilience, loyalty, and the undeniable allure of Namor City.

I adore this children's tale, and the little belt on Farsqueak is darling. One of my favourites.
