Osmund’s Folly is the unofficial name of a town square in
Estwald. In 742 SKR, the unpopular king
Osmund Valmar unveiled a golden statue of himself in the square. This statue depicted him as tall, heroic, and wielding a sword in triumph. In reality, Osmund was known to be rather cowardly, terrified of horses, and had never held a weapon. The statue was considered a slap in the face by the over-taxed people of
Summerlund, and the rumblings of rebellion began.
In 743 SKR, the popular Duke
Califax Padwyn of
Ostralm incited rebellion against the king. He dragged Osmund from
Castle Caladorn to the square, tried him, and had him hung from his own statue. The statue was melted down, and the gold was used for various charitable works, furthering Califax’s popularity. The town square where the statue had been became locally known as Osmund’s Folly, much to the chagrin of
House Valmar.
The square now hosts regular markets, where a stall can be rented for a few copper pieces.
