Uthol Varstros

Uthol Varstros was a Summerlund-born Tiefling student of magics at the Universitas Magesterium. Although he tried learning from the Iron Sigil and Serpent Eye techniques, neither one truly appealed to him. He eventually found what he was looking for in some of the forbidden stacks of the Universitas’ library – books that the masters of the last 250 years had collected to keep safe and out of the hands of those who might seek to claim them. He studied dark magics of necromancy, combining them with the mind-magics of the Serpent Eye school. He called his new technique Black Raven, and other students slowly joined him in this rogue school within the school. As time went on, he dabbled with entreating dark powers for even more magic, becoming a Warlock, which was expressly forbidden by school policies.

By the time the masters of the Universitas realized what was going on, it was too late. The Second Witching War was upon them, and Uthol had sold them out to the Witch-Queen. The masters managed to deny Uthol free access to even worse manuscripts by breaking the land, destroying the school, and letting the sea flood their valley, creating the Lake of Lost Memory. When the Witch Queen failed to reward or protect him, Uthol sought refuge in Falwyth, where his school of magic is thought to have continued and flourished.
