Cuomo Kayat
Goddess of memories and lust
Cuomo Kayat is a mysterious fox-like Shifter in search of her place in the world. Having become a somewhat reluctant and empathetic predator since entering mortal society, she prefers to manipulate her prey's emotions before taking their souls—receiving memory and insight from each soul she consumes.
In that wild, predatory existence, Cuomo nonetheless felt a deeper connection to the forests around her. In Time, she came to understand that this was the Magic of Toriel that coursed through every fiber of her being, and she felt a deeper connection with nature. With no one to teach her, instead, she learned to call upon this power in her own ways—most often using it to quicken her reflexes in pursuit of prey. If she was careful and close enough, she also found she might soothe a panicked deer so that it remained serene and calm even as she and her packmates sank their teeth into its flesh.
The world of mortals was as distant and unsettling to Cuomo as it was to the icefoxes, but she felt drawn to it for reasons she could not explain. Humans, in particular, were coarse, gruff creatures... and when a band of huntsmen camped nearby, Cuomo watched them from afar as they went about their grim business.
When one of them was wounded by a stray arrow, Cuomo could feel his life seeping away. Knowing nothing but the instincts of a predator, she savored the soul leaving his body, and through it, gained brief flashes of his memories—the lover he had lost in battle and the children he had left behind when he came north. Cuomo subtly pushed his emotions from fear to sorrow to joy and comforted him with visions of a sun-soaked meadow as he died.
Afterward, she found that Human words now came to her easily, like something from a half-remembered dream, and Cuomo knew the time had come to leave the pack behind.
Keeping to the fringes of society, she felt more alive than ever. Her predatory nature remained, but she was caught up in a riot of new experiences, emotions, and customs across Toriel. Mortals, it seemed, also became fascinated by her in return—and she often used this to her advantage, draining their souls while charming them with recollections of beauty, hallucinations of deep longing, and occasionally dreams colored by raw sorrow.
She grew drunk on memories that were not her own and exhilarated in ending the lives of others even as she felt the grief and woe she brought to her victims. She experienced heartbreak and joy in tantalizing flashes that left her craving more. She wept at the images of brutal invaders from a faraway land of iron and stone. It was overwhelming, but she sensed her own power fading whenever she tried to stay away and could not help but partake again and again...
As Cuomo gorges herself on the soul of a Fairy, she is struck by a vision of a seed. The shifter does not fully understand the importance of this vision or what it signifies, yet she is compelled to follow its guidance. Drawn to the seed, Cuomo tracks it down to a group of cultists from the Blossom brotherhood. These cultists are attempting to harness the power within the seed to create a rift between planes, allowing Zyra's thorn to take over the seed and cover the world in thorns.
Cuomo manages to distract the cultists, causing their ritual to fail as she defeats them. However, the cultists have the numerical advantage and overpower Cuomo, until The Seekers intervene. They save Cuomo, who rushes to grab the seed and escapes while the Seekers fight off the demons. Upon touching the seed, Cuomo is struck by another vision—this time of an elven-looking woman in green, surrounded by other women.
Feeling compelled to find this woman, Cuomo consumes countless souls along her path, growing stronger but failing to find the elven woman. The Seekers finally catch up to Cuomo, who explains her vision. The Seekers decide to believe her and suggest she look in the Woods of the Vales, as her description matches that of dryads. In the Woods of the Vales, Cuomo meets a Dryad resembling the woman from her vision and learns of Eithne Flosthùl, the leader of the Sisters of the Vale. Eithne welcomes Cuomo, recognizing the shifter's important role in the world. The seed Cuomo carries is a token of the World tree in the Feywild and needs to be returned to it.
Eithne takes Cuomo under her wing, teaching her much about the world. Her first task is to correct Cuomo's habit of luring people and consuming their souls. Cuomo learns to hide this habit rather than avoid it. Eithne then teaches Cuomo a great deal about druidism and compassion for nature, bolstering her natural abilities. Cuomo realizes she has spent years with Eithne, who she now considers a mentor. It is finally time to return the seed to the World Tree, and Cuomo crosses into the Feywild.
In the Feywild, she is welcomed by the Summer Court and escorted to the World Tree Wood. There, she is greeted by the Archfey of the Spring Court. During a ceremony, Cuomo presents the seed to the World Tree, which absorbs it. In return, Cuomo is granted immense power, enabling her to revive the memories of the souls she has stolen and learn from them.
Cuomo isolates herself to learn from all the souls she has absorbed, drawing from their experiences and stealing their abilities and wisdom. She also realizes that with each new soul she consumes, she extends her life. Despite Eithne's teachings, Cuomo returns to the material plane and continues to consume souls. With her newfound power, numerous shifters gather around her, seeing her as a hero sent by the heavens to protect them.
Cuomo becomes the leader of the shifters, demanding regular sacrifices in return for her protection, growing more powerful with each sacrifice. Despite this, the shifters continue to venerate her, and the countless souls she has absorbed slowly elevate her toward godhood.
Cuomo shields the shifters from the Great Extinction in 1070 BD, allowing them to hide from both dragons and giants.
In 1059 AD, Tana's Empire starts a crusade against the shifters, whom they consider cursed creatures of evil, initiating The Shift. Many shifters are captured and killed, prompting Cuomo to lead her people to safety far from the empire's grasp. Those who stayed behind fought against the empire's oppression, while Cuomo guided the shifters to the Beastlands, ensuring their survival and continued reverence for her growing power.
History
Cuomo's past memory is foggy, to say the least, myth and legends say she was an icefoxe, dwelling among the snowy tundra, but was blessed by Jaden Kor Deer to become humanoid. In fact, her earliest memories are of running with icefoxes in the northern reaches of Tall tree. Though she knew she was not one of them, they clearly saw her as a friend and came to accept her within the pack.In that wild, predatory existence, Cuomo nonetheless felt a deeper connection to the forests around her.
