Baraton III 'the Possessed'

King Baraton Blakfort (a.k.a. the Possessed)

Lived: 972 - 1040
Ruled: 1019 - 1040

Overview

Baraton III was an Honest and Generous man, but his Callousness often hindered him during his rule. Like his father before him, he was quite versed in the realm of intrigue, but his honesty prevented him from using it.

Early Reign

Unlike his predecessors, he didn't go to war immediately after receiving his crown. He chose to hold a grand feast instead. Before his coronation, he tasked a master craftsman and a mage to create a new crown for him. It looked very similar to his father's crown, but it was imbued with protection spells that protect its wearer. On the feast, he revealed his new crown, named the Eternal Crown of Blakfort which was reforged from the previous crown first worn by Jacob 'the Cursed'. This crown was declared to be the crown of Blakfort from that point forward.   In 1022, he was called to war by one of his allied to aid against a peasant rebellion. Honouring their alliance, he sent the royal army to squash the rebellion.   Following his family's belligerence, he declared war against the Krovian Kingdom in an attempt to conquer South Thurukya in 1025. While the Duke of Brica entered the war, it was on the Krovian side, who managed to secure an alliance with them. Without his loyal ally, Baraton called his Kerevan relative to war instead.   While the war was raging, the Kingdom of Atacodia also laid claim to Krovian territories and attacked them as well. During the same year, Baraton's friend and ally in the Merendellian Kingdom waged an internal war against another vassal of the Merendellian Throne. They called Baraton into war and he answered their call.   Soon after, the Duke of Thurukya passed away and his claim to South Thurukya died with him, thus ending the war with Krovia. This allowed Baraton's army to march North and win the war for his friend.   In 1026, he decided to divorce his wife like his father and marry a much younger countess.

Possession

A year later, he started showing symptoms of Jacob's Curse. He started hallucinating as well and had wild outbursts of emotions. He was later diagnosed with demonic possession, earning him his nickname. While the effects of Jacob's Curse weren't severe, his demonic outbursts were worrying. Fortunately, he seemed to be able to control himself and continued his rule under heavy surveillance by the Order.   In 1028, Avadell was officially incorporated into the Blakfort Kingdom.   In 1029, the Primas of the Blakfort Kingdom tried to exorcise the demon possessing Baraton, but failed to do so. It only managed to anger the entity and made Baraton himself quite Irritable.   In a fit of rage, he challenged the Krovian King to a duel in 1031. While the two rulers were proud people and were willing to fight each other, they were already quite old. Their duel was a miserable struggle instead of a glorious showdown. Baraton struggled to keep himself composed and lost the duel, costing him his honour. He retreated into seclusion in an attempt to cure his affliction.

End of his Reign

In 1036, his nephew also displayed the effects of Jacob's Curse, but managed to survive the ordeal.   In 1040, death caught up to Baraton, who was driven mad by the possession and ended his own life by bludgeoning himself to death.
