Trolls
The magical creatures of Scovony have many forms that people don't know about. All of them are hideous, foul-smelling creatures that feast on human flesh and are hard to kill. The most commonly known facts about trolls are that they are large, green, vulnerable to sunlight and can regenerate their limbs, unless the wound is quickly burnt. Scovonian people have more experience facing trolls and they seem to have found that the sound of a church bell repels trolls.
The Feral or Savage Troll, sometimes called the Continental Troll is the only type of troll found on The Continent and they are simple minded creatures that are driven by instinct and an insatiable hunger for flesh. They often dwell in forests and swamps, setting up ambushes around commonly travelled paths and bridges. They are known for their remarkable healing abilities as they are known to be able to regrow limbs and even their head, unless the wound is 'treated' with fire. While they don't like sunlight, the myth that they turn to stone comes from their cousins, the night trolls.
Swamp Trolls get their name from the area they inhabit. Although feral trolls also live in swamps, swamp trolls don't live on The Continent and thus rarely share the same home. The swamp trolls' other name provides more insight into their unique nature. Known as Troll Hags, they are expert magicians, who channel chaotic magic to create complicated illusions and potions from various herbs around their habitat. They prefer a less direct aproach to getting their fill than their feral counterparts. They often pose as pretty women to lure men into the depths of the swamp or act as a potion brewer who lives at the edge of villages. In exchange for 'small favours', they often brew concoctions for all kinds of problems for those who seek an immediate solution to their woes. These solutions almost always come at a cost that is too great for the recipient however.
Night Trolls are similar to Troll Hags in that they rely on trickery and magic to feed on victims. They are the best at hiding amongst common folk and often live within settlements as shamans and witches. At night, they weave chaotic magic to influence the dreams of their prey to manipulate them into doing horrible deeds. The Night Trolls feed off of the suffering they cause and not the bodies of the fallen. They are extremely vulnerable to sunlight, which causes their skin to turn to stone, so they never leave their hovels during the day.
Mountain Trolls are more akin to feral trolls than the rest of their kindred. They are the largest and most physiqually emposing type of troll. Their skin resembles stone which makes it easy for them to hide in plain sight, often laying on the side of a mountain undetected for years until they move. Mountain trolls are also incredibly lazy, only searching for food every few years, when they go on a rampage and consume whole villages before returning to their slumber.
