Faernin

“A man emerges from the woods, clad in dyed hides and wooden armor. His antlers are painted and his nose is pierced by a circular piece of enchanted wood. He grasps his staff firmly and sits down. He prays to the Wisp Mother, hoping for a response.”

Basic Information

Biological Traits

Faernin are often brown or green skinned with exotic hair colors ranging from light blue to purple. They have antlers that grow as they age and often are decorated with paint or piercings. Faernin also has deer-like ears that droop slightly and a deer-like nose. Their legs resemble that of a deer and their eyes are normally a vibrant shade of green or blue.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Faernin often live in communities of around 50 members. These tribes are closely knit and hard to break apart. Faernin are loyal to their people and tribe above all else. A Faernin that actively goes against their own people is rare, but has happened in the past. Faernin tribes are lead by a chieftain, often a very old and wise Faernin chosen due to his contributions to the tribe. Chieftains are also the religious leaders of tribes, leading rituals and prayers to the Wisp Mother.   Faernin religion sees the Wisp Mother as the almighty deity and the descendent of the sun, the creator of Tundrusk. They hold weekly rituals that involve a feast created from a dangerous beast, dancing, and prayer. The Faernin are proud of their religion, and often adorn themselves in trinkets, charms, and other symbols that relate to the Wisp Mother.

Civilization and Culture

Beauty Ideals

Faernin clothes consist of hide gathered from wild beasts, wooden armor, dyes, and a large amount of wooden piercings and jewelry.

Average Technological Level

The Faernin rely on wood for most of their tools and equipment and thus have grown used to shaping it for many purposes.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Faernin are some of the best hunters in Tundrusk. Faernin are often found hunting dangerous beasts in the Forest’s Edge in order to feed their tribe or have a better chance at becoming a Guardian. Some Faernin become skilled craftsmen, making wonderful armaments from enchanted wood. Others go on to become druids and apothecaries and some others become shamans.   Faernin tend to be good aligned due to their values of loyalty and their love for all things living. Their protection of the Forest’s Edge embodies their love for nature but their hunting shows their acknowledgement of the processes of life.

Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals

Faernin have a unique culture that differs from many other races in Tundrusk. All the Faernin tribes meet on Rulin’s Peak thrice a year to establish alliances, negotiate peace, trade amongst themselves, and determine who guards the Tree of the Wisp Mother. These meetings are known as the Triannual Accords and are the largest celebration in Faernin culture. Each meeting lasts a week and consists of games, a festival, hunting tournaments, and the selection of Guardians. The Guardians are the best hunters who are chosen to guard the Wisp Mother’s resting place.   The last accord of each year is the most important. During this accord, a new Grand Chieftain is chosen to act as a ceremonial leader of all the Faernin tribes. The Grand Chieftain acts as the main diplomat to other nations on behalf of the Faernin and as their representative to the Fey Court. He also schedules the Ancient Hunt, a tournament held once a year in which the best hunter from each tribe competes in a gauntlet to show off their tribe’s skill and prowess.

History

A race descended from the Fey, the Faernin are natives to Forest’s Edge and inhabit most of the forest, living in small communities. A few Faernin live in Willow’s Keep, acting as diplomats, merchants, or apothecaries.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Very few Faernin are found outside of the Forest’s Edge and those who are are usually diplomats, outlaws, or those who sought more than the traditional life ahead of them. Either way, seeing a Faernin is rare for most, and many don’t even know of their existence.
