Lua & Esta

Sister Goddesses of the Stars and Moons Lua & Esta

Though Reina's light was everpresent, she was alone in the heavens. So she created two to join her: First Esta, who walked hand-in-hand with the world below, then Lua, who spun and danced amongst the stars. And as sisters, they lit the skies of Lume together.
— The Voice of the Heavens
Lua, Goddess of the Stars, younger sister of Esta and Reina, attends Reina as a handmaiden, taking her place as the smaller of Lume's two moons. Lua speeds through the sky, marvelling at the stars created by her eldest sister.   Esta, Goddess of the Moons, the middle sister, also attends Reina as a handmaiden, taking her place as the larger of Lume's two moons. Esta keeps watch over her younger sister as she dances across the sky, always slowly staying in step.   Lua and Esta are always worshipped alongside Reina; no depiction of Reina is without them, and vice versa. Lua's followers act as missionaries and prophets of Reina, striving to spread her worship across all of Lume. Esta's followers keep order among Reina's devoted, acting as guides and guardians.

Divine Domains

Heavens

Lua and Esta are the only gods in the Heavens domain, thus encompassing it entirely. Their followers are often considered subsets of Reina's followers, and consequently temples to Reina include shrines to both sisters as well.

Holy Books & Codes

The Voice of the Heavens

Lua and Esta do not have their own dedicated holy book, instead sharing The Voice of the Heavens with Reina. This work has been passed down by the Sun Queen's prophets for millennia, each diligently recording Reina's will so that it might be passed on to her followers. Control of The Voice of the Heavens is currently with the sorcerer-empresses of the Exalted Imperium of Oriand, who claim their power directly from Reina herself.

Lua and Esta appear many times in The Voice of the Heavens, beginning with their creation by their elder sister. Many of Reina's great works were done with Lua and Esta aiding her - when Odos, Fallen God of Murder, rampaged across the world during the Second Age, Lua and Esta were sent to defend their faithful.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

Symbol of Lua

A star shining in front of a crescent moon. Lua's symbol reflects her position as Goddess of the Stars, and is often worn as a charm or pendant. This symbol is given as a gift to those about to undertake a long journey, in hopes that their travels will be as swift and safe as Lua's. Those who bear her mark claim that they can travel through the night, for Lua's light will continue to guide their way.

Symbol of Esta

Symbol of Esta

A number of crescent moons within a larger full moon. Esta's symbol reflects her position as Goddess of the Moons, and is often embossed or etched into clothing or armor. The symbol is sometimes added to military insignia or the crests of ruling noble families and represents their duty to guide and protect, just as the largest moon protects the smaller moons within it. The Sunlit Shields, known as holy warriors of Reina, even have this symbol emblazoned upon the backs of their armor.

Tenets of Faith

Lua's Tenets

  • Walk the world freely, and let others pass freely in turn.
  • Dance when the feeling takes you - find joy in expression.
  • Spread the words of Reina across all lands.

Esta's Tenets

  • Remember patience and humility, for not all see the world as you do.
  • To move slow is not to fall behind, rather it is to walk so each step is deliberate.
  • Guard and protect Reina's followers against any foe.

Holidays

Once every five years by the Lightbringer Calendar, an extra day is added to the intercalary period. This is the Day of the Twirling Moons, a part of the Grand Festival of the Divine. Though the day is said to be for Lua and Esta, more often than not it is treated as an extension of the Day of the Golden Sun.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Lua and Esta were born during the Second Age of Creation, formed from the everpresent light by Reina. For countless millennia, they have roamed the skies of Lume, spreading Reina's light in even the darkest of nights.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Lua and Esta are both close with the other gods and goddesses of Reina's pantheon. They have a particularly close relationship with Cedall, God of Friendship, and Canto, God of Devotion.   As told in The Voice of the Heavens, Cedall and Canto competed to win the love of the sisters, with each asking both Lua and Esta to marry them. Before either could answer Reina intervened, declaring that her sisters were hers and hers alone. Despite this refusal, the four still remain close.

The moons are slaves and the sun the master, the Moonlit Seamstress tells us true, sent by the sisters a cry for help...
But a blade and hammer forged in dark, together shall tear the sun apart! Soon we set forth with crescent blade and moonstone hammer, and we shall see the skies once more!

The artwork you have is beautiful. The idea of sister goddesses representing celestial objects is very nice. This is my take on your pantheon so take it with a grain of salt, I found it weird that Lua is the goddess of stars, putting myself as a mortal in your world, if I see 2 moons in the sky, I would depict the deity representing the moons as twin deities of the moons and the stard would be another deity. But this is only me :D Nice work!

That's a good point, and it sorta comes down to the creation myth. Long story short, each of the three celestial objects (sun and two moons) is a physical representation of a goddess, while the stars aren't understood to be "physical" in the same sense. I'll be sure to write that up properly, thanks for the feedback!

The relation between the sister goddesses is very deep and intriguing. The fact that they don't have their own holy book but share the same than Reina inspires me, like the artworks from Emily Balivet :p
