Session 53 - Battles upon Battles

General Summary

From Laura's Journal
Battles upon battles; skirmishes really. That is what lies before us now: we must find, puzzle, and fight our way to the entrance. Hopefully, we will find the city and Magog beyond. It scares me a little, but our mission now is to end this; if we don’t it will end us. Just sweet Diana I pray not as a Slaad tadpole host or worse!
Since entering this odd not-temple we have been (somewhat methodically) working our way from room and brazier to room and brazier to remove the glowing flaming barriers between us and whatever is beyond this sealed space. In each chamber the fire burns a different color and must be doused with water? -- a liquid of the same color. The stone statues in all chambers have put up at least as much of a fight as the minions of the Titan gods the statues represent, and the minions seem to serve. I wonder if these creatures know Maagog and think there is right there? We started with the yellow room, because most of us were closest to it when we decided to start, and the first barrier seemed to be of yellow flame. Fortunately, it contained only serpent statues to be immobilized. We quickly dispatched them with magic and magic weapons (I will run out of special arrows too soon at this rate). Kleeck summed Noctua to explore beyond the windows and found simply – chaos. Wherever we are I think it is like the sea that Eris sails neither here nor there in the world that I thought was all the world. After dousing the yellow flames and leaving piles of rubble where statures were animated, we returned to the main room to see that the yellow wall of flame had been doused as well.   Next was the blue orb, entry to a room with water and a turtle statue on a pedestal in the middle with blue flame in the brazier. Our entrance was noted and a battle with Kuo-Toa and the stone turtle ensued. Having fought them before we dispatched these odd fish people relatively quickly and Kleeck did the honors of flying over to douse the flames and explore the chambers beyond so we could avoid any nastiness that might be in the water.   By the time we entered the third room, green this time, I was not particularly surprised by the 2 hydra and several Lizardfolk. Battle was joined and won at cost. Flame walls have their uses, but also get in the way a tad. I am glad Kleeck and Hassan can take them down as well as put them up! I wonder if Hassan can remove the mud pit from the central room. I still have not figured out the rules of magic as they seem to differ from person to person, based on deity, training, aptitude and something else ineffable. I do prefer healing and when fighting prefer hydra to Slaadi; yes, they can regrow their heads, but at least they don’t grow inside you! The odd thing in this green room was that the water for dowsing the flame had been hidden away in a back corner. We did find it as well as the lizardfolk who had tried to hide in another dead-end corridor.   Now we play with time to rest before pressing on to see what is behind the other colored orbs, hopefully find a way out, join battle with Magog and end this scourge on Rome.   I wonder if the truth of TLPs story can be brought out with Magog’s destruction?
