Ancient Empire of Obsidia

"Obsidia will never fall."
— King Anode of Obsidia
In modern historiography, Ancient Obsidia refers to civilization in the Obsidian Lands (modern day lands of The Voladrian League) at the seat of Mount Tabaxis from the founding of the Dwarven Empire in the 16th century BS to the Obsidian plague of 1 BS. Ancient Obsidia began as a small settlement beside the magma pits of Mount Tabaxis in southern Tyras. The settlement grew into the city and polity of Obsidia Prime under its first ruler King Anode of Obsidia, and came to control its neighbors through a combination of treaties and military strength. It eventually dominated the entire Obsidian Lands, and acquired an Empire that took in much of Southern Tyras and the lands and the Ganymedean Basin. It was among the largest empires in the ancient world, with an estimated 50 to 90 million inhabitants, roughly 20% of the Tyras' population at the time.   Obsidian civilization has contributed to modern language, religion, society, technology, law, politics, government, warfare, art, literature, architecture and engineering. Obsidia professionalized and expanded its military and created a system of government called res publica, the inspiration for the The Voladrian League. It achieved impressive technological and architectural feats, such as the empire-wide construction of both water and lava aqueducts and roads, as well as more grandiose monuments and facilities.
Ancient Obsidia
Plagued by internal instability and attacked by various migrating peoples, the western part of the empire broke up into independent barbarian kingdoms in the 1st century BS. The eastern part of Obsidia remained a power until its fall in 1 BS, where the Great Plague shattered the remains of its people. The survivors fled to nearby Ssishasz Alpha, or sought refuge with Ileyena's Guildmasters or in other cities.
